A Milano, città destinata a una crescita economica e criminale vertiginosa durante il boom, Santo Russo, calabrese cresciuto nell'hinterland, dopo i primi furti in periferia e il carcere minorile, decide di seguire le sue aspirazioni e di intraprendere definitivamente la vita del criminale. Nel giro di pochi anni diventa la mente e il braccio armato di una potente e temuta gang, lanciandosi in affari sempre più sporchi e redditizi: rapine, sequestri, traffici di droga, riciclaggio di denaro sporco, e non ultimi i miracoli, esecuzioni a sangue freddo. Nella sua corsa sfrenata verso la ricchezza e la soddisfazione sociale, Santo Russo è diviso tra due donne: la moglie, remissiva e devota, e l'amante, una donna bellissima, elegante e irraggiungibile.

Negli anni Settanta Dick Cheney sta con una ragazza davvero in gamba, Lynne, che riesce a farlo ammettere all'Università, dove lui però viene travolto dal gozzovigliare da college e, tra una sbornia e l'altra, finisce per farsi espellere. Non contento, continua a bere anche mentre lavora ai pali della corrente elettrica, finisce in una rissa e viene arrestato per guida in stato di ebrezza. A quel punto Lynne gli dà un ultimatum: o diventa la persona di potere che lei in quanto donna non può essere ma può aiutare e guidare, oppure tra loro è finita. La storia è nota: i due diventeranno una "power couple" di Washington e domineranno placidamente, quasi nell'ombra, l'amministrazione di George W. Bush, tra le più devastanti per la democrazia americana.

È però sulle sue tracce il vigilante David Dunn, che grazie all'aiuto del figlio e alle sue visioni psichiche arriva presto a un confronto con il feroce avversario. Entrambi però finiscono catturati dalla polizia e dalla psichiatra Ellie Staple e rinchiusi in un istituto psichiatrico, lo stesso dove da 19 anni è prigioniero "l'uomo di vetro", il geniale Elijah Price. Per lui sarà finalmente l'occasione di dimostrare al mondo che le sue teorie sugli esseri dotati di superpoteri sono reali. Nel mentre il figlio di David, la ragazza sopravvissuta all'Orda e la madre di Elijah cercano di salvare i propri cari dalle cure di Ellie Staple.

Il giovane Tenchi Masaki decide di trasferirsi a Tokyo, per poter sfruttare le opportunità che può garantirgli la grande città. Qui il ragazzo conosce una graziosa adolescente di nome Sakuya Kumashiro. I due ragazzi in breve tempo finiscono per innamorarsi, ma Sakuya è inconsapevole di essere stata creata da una malvagia entità proprio allo scopo di concupire Tenchi, in modo di poter dominare il mondo.
