After 300 shows in 1970, the band kicked off '71 with a run through Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee, before heading north to play Pittsburgh for the first time. The venue was the venerable Syria Mosque, a 3,700 seat theatre constructed in 1916 which served as the home for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Syria Mosque saw rock acts like The Who, Pink Floyd, The Band, Deep Purple and Yes grace its stage, with the Allmans making the first of two 1971 appearances on Jan. 17. This marks the first official release for this recording which has been circulating among fans as a cassette for years, and occasionally a bootleg CD or vinyl disc. Although there's an interesting story there as well. The group returned to Syria Mosque nine months later, on Oct. 15, playing what would be Duane Allman's third-to-last show before his untimely death on Oct. 29, 1971. Copies of both the Jan. 17 and Oct. 15 shows would circulate among the ABB tape-trading community during the 1990s, with the October tape often misidentified as Duane's final show, and, in some cases, with the dates of the Syria Mosque shows swapped. Here the confusion has been straightened out; this band-approved official release is from Jan. 17, and you can listen to Duane's last show from Oct. 17, 1971 at Painters Mill Music Fair near Baltimore by picking up The Final Note, which came in 2020. Recorded direct from the band's soundboard and then restored and remastered, this recording captures the arc of the band's sound as they were ramping up to the classic At Fillmore East album, recorded just eight weeks later in March 1971.     Jade Warrior - Released (Expanded) 1971 (2022) 44.1-24 Country: UK Genre: Progressive Rock Format: FLAC (*tracks) Quality: Lossless [44,1kHz/24 bit] Time: 51:33 Full Size: 540.16 MB If Jade Warrior's second album has any overwhelming flaw, it is that its predecessor traveled so far off the conventional beaten tracks of early-'70s prog that anything less than absolute reinvention could only be regarded as a rerun of past glories. To write off Released as little more than a slapdash shadow of Jade Warrior, however, is to overlook the leaps and bounds that the band did make. The opening "Eyes On You" journeys in on a positively spiky guitar and horn duel, while Glyn Havard's vocals have taken on tones that are far-removed from the Jethro Tull-shaped nuances with which they were once most readily compared. Staggering, too, are the almost bluesy guitar work-outs that leap unexpectedly in and out of the mix, overwhelming all but the most ferocious elements elsewhere in the arsenal -- judging only by the crescendo that closes it, "Three Horned Dragon King" could not have been better named. Similarly, "Water Curtain Cave" is as much a melting of souls as it is a gentle song, while other numbers tackle light jazz and classical prog without once vacating the band's accustomed framework of brilliance. Reminiscent, in places, of a less-precious successor to Quintessence and the Incredible String Band in that moods and esotericism do sometimes get the better of the band's more conventional music impulses, Jade Warrior is nevertheless a remarkable album, all the more so since its makers could readily have given the likes of Jethro Tull and the Moody Blues some serious competition in the mellifluous prog stakes. Glyn Havard's vocals themselves can sound extraordinarily Ian Anderson-ish in places, with Field's wielding of the flute and some distinctly edgy tempos only furthering that impression. Elsewhere, however, the same tools combine to induce emotions that range from trance to terror, an accomplishment that means highlights of the album are difficult to single out.
