If anything, this is the most impenetrable album Pink Floyd released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem to head anywhere, but is often intriguing, more in what it suggests than what it achieves. Then, on the second side, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Rick Wright have a song apiece, winding up with the group composition "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" wrapping it up. Of these, Waters begins developing the voice that made him the group's lead songwriter during their classic era with "If," while Wright has an appealingly mannered, very English psychedelic fantasia on "Summer 68," and Gilmour's "Fat Old Sun" meanders quietly before ending with a guitar workout that leaves no impression. "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast," the 12-minute opus that ends the album, does the same thing, floating for several minutes before ending on a drawn-out jam that finally gets the piece moving. So, there are interesting moments scattered throughout the record, and the work that initially seems so impenetrable winds up being Atom Heart Mother's strongest moment. That it lasts an entire side illustrates that Pink Floyd was getting better with the larger picture instead of the details, since the second side just winds up falling off the tracks, no matter how many good moments there are. Although the reception for the album was largely mixed on release-some reviewers savaged it-the songs in retrospect are nothing short of amazing; this is by no means bottom-of-the-barrel Beatles. Tunes like "Get Back," "Let It Be," and "The Long and Winding Road" are as good as anything the band ever wrote or recorded. The first volume here contains the original album in a fresh 96 kHz/24-bit remix that like the other Giles Martin-directed mixes is sharper and brighter than the original but not fundamentally different. The biggest aural change has Ringo Starr's drums brought up and forward in the mix, like in the previous reissues in the series. Perhaps most important about this edition of Let It Be is that after years of being bootlegged, Glyn Johns' 1969 Get Back mix has finally been officially released in improved sound and can now be fairly compared to the 1970 version. Deliberately jumbled, with lots of studio patter left in, and meant to be a window into the band's loose, humorous way of making music (or what they hoped to project as such), it still feels sloppy and unfinished, which may be why The Beatles-who waffled throughout the process and initially wanted that ambiance-rejected it in en masse. Johns' mix opens with "One After 909" (written by Paul and John as teenagers) and then proceeds through looser versions of "Don't Let Me Down" (with fabulous accompaniment from keyboardist Billy Preston) "Dig A Pony," and "I've Got a Feeling" with Lennon adding his usual silly, sardonic asides throughout. George Harrison's "For You Blue" opens with the sound of ice cubes swirling in a drink. Young performed two shows at Carnegie Hall, one on the 4th and another at midnight the next morning. Bootleggers were unable to capture this first show, which according to Young was "by far, a much superior show". The show's setlist covers one of the most revered eras of Young's career, with stripped-down versions of 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere', 'Down By The River', 'Helpless' and 'Sugar Mountain', plus 'After The Goldrush' from the album of the same name, released only nine weeks prior to the Carnegie Hall show. Shot more as a test than a true documentary, it was hurriedly whipped together as an official film shortly after the great singer-songwriterguitarist's unfortunate death, and actually was put on an European tour with acts managed by the artist's former manager. The final product has protest footage interspersed among the great performances, and at the time, when everyone was so hungry for anything Jimi, it became one of the most popular music films of its era. Now it can be viewed more as a time capsule wrapped around performances by Hendrix et al, performing a distinctly unique set for the time. The film features excerpts of performances by Jimi, bassist Billy Cox, and drummer Mitch Mitchell from the two concerts. They perform hot versions of such Hendrix favorites as "Purple Haze," a remarkable lengthy tour de force takes on "Machine Gun" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," and the artist's inimitable take on Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." Now digitally remastered, Jimi Plays Berkeley finally emerges for the first time on Blu-ray with newly minted stereo and 5.1 surround sound, mixed by original Hendrix producer/engineer Eddie Kramer. As an added audio-only bonus, the Blu-ray features the entire second set from that evening mixed in 5.1 surround sound. Jimi Plays Berkeley includes footage of: 01. Jimi In Limousine 02. There are two audio options here, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track which streams at an average rate of around 5.0 mbps (sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less) and an uncompressed LPCM 5.1 mix which holds steady at 6.9 mbps. Jacob was soon hired to do sound for Hendrix while they were on tour and he has some great, often funny, anecdotes to share..
