Energized by the very real and sometimes visible tensions between singer Black Francis (nee Charles Thompson) and bassist Kim Deal, the foursome-rounded out with drummer David Lovering and guitarist Joey Santiago-made a series of albums that sound as visionary and otherworldly today as they did on release. In the oceanic expanse of '90s alt-rock bands, the Pixies' art stood alone until their 1993 split. Despite a trio of new albums since their 2004 reunion, it's been clear that their pervasive magic had ebbed away. But here on Doggerel, their eighth album in their 35 years together, they come closest to making what fans think of as a Pixies record. The opener "Nomatterday," which switches tempos near its middle for an arty interlude, is a beautiful example of Francis' howled vocals, Santiago's distinct, discordant guitar, Lovering's simple, forceful drumming, and menacing bass underpinning from Paz Lenchantin, who joined the band in 2014. Best of all, it radiates some of the requisite madness that once made their music so special. However, where they were once eternally provoked and urgently reaching, old age has set in as Francis sings about being loaded at the 7-Eleven ("Vault of Heaven"), and in "Dregs of the Wine"-the first Santiago original ever recorded by the band-divulges a mundane reason why he and his ex-wife split: "While I prefer the original version of 'You Really Got Me'/ She will defer to the Van Halen version." In an odd twist of sequencing, Doggerel closes with its two strongest numbers. Its most memorable moment, "You're Such a Sadducee," is a stomping pop tune with cascades of vocals and a whiff of "Wave of Mutilation" and the title track effectively wields the loud-soft dynamic that was once the Pixies' most striking songwriting weapons. Not only did the album introduce the world to Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney, and Mike Starr, it was also a pivotal album in the era of grunge music. Facelift has sold over 2 million copies in the US alone and includes the hits "Man in the Box," "Bleed the Freak," "We Die Young," and "Sea of Sorrow." "When Alice in Chains' debut album, Facelift, was released in 1990, about a year before Nirvana's Nevermind, the thriving Seattle scene barely registered on the national musical radar outside of underground circles (although Soundgarden's major-label debut, Louder Than Love, was also released that year and brought them a Grammy nomination). That started to change when MTV jumped all over the video for "Man in the Box," giving the group a crucial boost and helping to pave the way for grunge's popular explosion toward the end of 1991. Although their dominant influences -- Black Sabbath, the Stooges -- were hardly unique on the Seattle scene, Alice in Chains were arguably the most metallic of grunge bands, which gave them a definite appeal outside the underground; all the same, the group's sinister, brooding, suffocating sound resembled little else gaining wide exposure on the 1990 hard rock scene. Neither hedonistic nor especially technically accomplished, Alice in Chains' songs were mostly slow, oppressive dirges with a sense of melody that was undeniable, yet which crept along over the murky sludge of the band's instrumental attack in a way that hardly fit accepted notions of what made hard rock catchy and accessible. Although some parts of Facelift sink into turgid, ponderous bombast (particularly over the erratic second half), and the lyrics are sometimes immature, the overall effect is fresh, exciting, and powerful. While Alice in Chains would go on to do better and more consistent work, Facelift was one of the most important records in establishing an audience for grunge and alternative rock among hard rock and heavy metal listeners, and with its platinum sales certification, it also made Alice in Chains the first Seattle band to break through to a wider, less exclusively underground audience." "The Crossroads performers are all musicians I admire and respect." With 38 tracks, CROSSROADS showcases a wide range of artists from rock, country, jazz, and blues including performances by jazz fusionist John McLaughlin, roots rocker Albert Lee, Chicago blues legend Hubert Sumlin, hit-making singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow, Texas bluesman Jimmie Vaughan, slide guitarist Sonny Landreth, Latin rockers Los Lobos, and country star Vince Gill. A seminar for guitar fanatics, Clapton's set paid tribute to his close friend George Harrison with Isn't It A Pity and revisited Derek & The Dominos with Tell The Truth. Jeff Beck delivered a mind-blowing instrumental set with Big Block. The Robert Cray Band was joined by Vaughn, Sumlin and B.B. King for Sitting On Top Of The World, Rock Me Baby, and Paying The Cost To Be The Boss; while young gun John Mayer flexed his skills with Belief and Gravity. The concert provided plenty of impressive guitar heroics with some of the world's best guitarists jamming together. Young phenom and member of The Allman Brothers Band, Derek Trucks, battled legendary bluesman Johnny Winters on slide guitar during a rollicking version of Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited. Robbie Robertson made a rare stage appearance playing with Clapton on Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love. Performing together live for the first time in 25 years, Blind Faith band mates Steve Winwood and Clapton soared through a set that included Presence Of The Lord, Dear Mr. Fantasy, Had To Cry Today and Crossroads. The Chicago show ended on a fitting note with Chicago-blues icon Buddy Guy playing a set featuring him solo and leading an all-star jam on Sweet Home Chicago that included Clapton, Cray, Mayer, Sumlin, Vaughan, and Winter.
