A pastoral mood prevails, with swells of melancholic violin and Spaghetti Western harmonica, backed by honky-tonk piano and the dry drum sounds of Neil Young's Harvest period, while the golden voice of Holly Holden adds a touch of glamour to proceedings. David's process includes much musical improvisation and stream-of-consciousness writing, but his end goal is to couple classic songwriting with the collective chemistry of musicians playing live in the studio. His lyric influences include Tom Verlaine, John Cooper Clarke and the New York School of Poets, particularly James Schuyler. Besides being the co-founder of iconic rockband Toto, he has contributed to more than 2,000 albums. Music is the soundtrack of our lives, and David is one of its architects. With his diverse catalogue, he has been kicking around song ideas for a solo album for some time. The COVID lockdown presented Paich the opportunity to revisit those songs and the result is a collection of tunes that he has carried in his head for years. For as much as it may be a "solo" album, Paich couldn't help but invite a few friends to play. Joined by Joseph Williams as co-producer and sometimes co-vocalist, he welcomed everyone, from Toto's Steve Lukather to Brian Eno, Michael McDonald, Ray Parker Jr., Don Felder and Steve Jordan of The Rolling Stones. The album cover artwork provides a poetically nostalgic representation of the concept. It features a variety of memories Paich's wife has held onto over the years. "I hope this will give everyone a glimpse into another side of me, one they've never heard in a musical context." Music is the soundtrack of our life. For David, music is much more than the soundtrack of his life. As one of its architects, it is his life. "While you don't feel cheated by the 30 minutes, you do wind up wanting more when the album is done. But the album covers so many facets of what makes David Paich a LEGENDARY songwriter and performer. "Forgotten Toys" were ideas floating around in his head that needed to be recorded. Hiring Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers as a co-producer, Bowie created a stylish, synthesized post-disco dance music that was equally informed by classic soul and the emerging new romantic subgenre of new wave, which was ironically heavily inspired by Bowie himself. Let's Dance comes tearing out of the gate, propulsed by the skittering "Modern Love," the seductively menacing "China Girl," and the brittle funk of the title track. All three songs became international hits, and for good reason -- they're catchy, accessible pop songs that have just enough of an alien edge to make them distinctive. However, that careful balance is quickly thrown off by a succession of pleasant but unremarkable plastic soul workouts. "Cat People" and a cover of Metro's "Criminal World" are relatively strong songs, but the remainder of the album indicates that Bowie was entering a songwriting slump.
