Stephen Leather - Il barone della droga (2015) PDF Il barone della droga Gerry Carpenter è detenuto in un carcere di massima sicurezza in attesa di giudizio, ma non è del tutto fuori gioco. Negli stessi giorni in cui la polizia ne celebra la cattura, il pericoloso criminale scatena una vera e propria campagna di terrore: i testimoni che dovrebbero deporre al suo processo vengono minacciati, gli uomini delle forze dell'ordine coinvolti nel caso uccisi, le prove raccolte contro di lui distrutte. Per far luce su come Carpenter stia guidando l'operazione da dietro le sbarre, la polizia decide di infiltrare il detective Dan "Spider" Shepherd, che si ritroverà catapultato tra criminali seriali e psicopatici assassini, capaci di fiutare l'odore di un poliziotto a un chilometro di distanza. Shepherd sa che molte delle guardie carcerarie sono corrotte e non può fidarsi di nessuno: una mossa sbagliata significherebbe morte certa. Quando riesce ad avvicinare Carpenter, scopre una realtà ancora più inquietante: i tentacoli del criminale che si allungano fuori dalle mura del carcere possono avvinghiarsi a ogni segmento della società, fino a sfiorare ciò che per Shepherd vale più di ogni cosa: la sua stessa famiglia. Un thriller claustrofobico, serrato, sullo sfondo di luoghi tetri e inaccessibili, dove il discrimine tra la vita e la morte è più sottile di quanto si possa immaginare.
