It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively maintain the thematic coherence -- nearly every song is imbued with the morbidity, self-disgust, and/or resignation of a self-aware yet powerless addict. Cantrell's technically limited but inventive guitar work is by turns explosive, textured, and queasily disorienting, keeping the listener off balance with atonal riffs and off-kilter time signatures. Staley's stark confessional lyrics are similarly effective, and consistently miserable. Sometimes he's just numb and apathetic, totally desensitized to the outside world; sometimes his self-justifications betray a shockingly casual amorality; his moments of self-recognition are permeated by despair and suicidal self-loathing. Even given its subject matter, Dirt is monstrously bleak, closely resembling the cracked, haunted landscape of its cover art. The album holds out little hope for its protagonists (aside from the much-needed survival story of "Rooster," a tribute to Cantrell's Vietnam-vet father), but in the end, it's redeemed by the honesty of its self-revelation and the sharp focus of its music. Featuring Ian Paice of Deep Purple, Purpendicular create Godly rootsy hard rock, understandably steeped in a 'Purple tradition: hearing is believing, and then you're hooked for good. "This band is one of the top bands I work with. You will love them; these guys are so good, I only have myself to worry about." - Ian Paice 2012 Ian had grown fond of Purpendicular due to their great musicianship and his friendship with singer Robby Walsh, who were introduced to each other by chance before their first show in Vienna in 2004. In the first two years, the band did shows in Austria and Germany, focusing mainly on the Steve Morse lineup era of Deep Purple. In 2012, the band embarked on the official 40th anniversary tour of Machine Head, supported by Ian Paice. Also in 2012, Purpendicular was the most booked Deep Purple tribute show in the world. This was repeated in 2013 and 2014. In August 2015, Purpendicular released their debut album, tHis is the tHing#1. 2016 saw another collaboration with Ian Paice for Purpendicular. This tour was by far the most successful and earned rave reviews from the media. Ian Paice himself said, "I have to seriously thank my friends in Purpendicular. They are a fine band of very talented musicians who give me the chance to play when I'm not with Purple. We always have a great time." The band's second studio album, Venus To Volcanus, was released in May 2017. Over the years, Purpendicular worked with such great musicians as Roger Glover, Tony Carey, Paul Morris, and also Neil Murray. In 2020, the band began work on the third studio album, Human Mechanic. Robby Walsh and Ian Paice made important decisions regarding the lineup to move forward. Unfortunately, the album itself was delayed by almost two years because of Covid. Musically, Human Mechanic offers the typical Ian Paice grooves and funky bass lines, but without neglecting the heavy hard rock sound. You won't find a copy of Deep Purple here, but many influences.     Venom Inc. - There's Only Black (2022) 44.1-24 Country: UK Genre: Heavy Metal Format: FLAC (*tracks) Quality: Lossless [44,1kHz/24 bit] Time: 53:43 Full Size: 642.81 MB With Cronos's Venom still soldiering onwards, original guitarist Jeff 'Mantas' Dunn's incarnation of the band has also returned with their second full-length under the Venom Inc. name. Having re-enlisted Prime Evil-era frontman Tony Dolan 'Demolition Man' in 2015 to tour some Venom classics again, the trio attempted to prove they were powered by more than mere nostalgia with 2017's patchy Ave, a muddled collection of songs ranging from solid to awful. There's Only Black, by contrast, is much more consistent; its highs may not match the vintage Venom riffery of Ave's Forged In Hell, for example, but there's also nothing as toe-curlingly embarrassing as Dein Fleisch here either. Despite the more subtle, minimalist cover art, the band's sound is still as brash and bombastic as ever. The groove metal influence that crept into Ave is still here, especially on chuggier cuts such as Rampant and Inferno, but Mantas's iconic riffing style shines through on sleazier numbers like Nine and the thrashy title track. Tony's gruff bark is a lot more generic than Cronos's infamous snarl, but he turns in a dependable performance nonetheless, while gloomier tracks such as Don't Feed Me Your Lies and Burn Liar Burn give him a chance to show off some more evocative, emotive basslines. As with every legacy act that ends up splitting in half, it's hard to shake the feeling that the ideal version of Venom lies somewhere in between the two and we'd all be better off if they'd just sit down and iron out their differences. But while Cronos's Venom has arguably descended into self-parody in recent years, Venom Inc. feel far more robust and energised. There's nothing here you haven't heard before, but fans of that Prime Evil line-up will be pleased to hear this is the most powerful they've sounded in years. This followed with seven live performances, partly with an orchestra, across Europe. La Divina Commedia aka The Dante Trilogy was to be Tangerine Dream's most ambitious and elaborate project to date, Edgar Froese's life work. Now, the entire trilogy (Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso) is presented in a deluxe 60-page hardback book set via Kscope. All albums have been remastered by close collaborator Harald Pairits with the 2002 live concert DVD filmed at Castle Nideggen, Cologne featured as a bonus disc. Darker, heavier, and more immediate than 2009's Endgame, Dave Mustaine's snarling vocals ride higher in the mix this time around, but fans need not fear, as his fleet fingers are still possessed with the power to conjure the dead. Much of the aptly named Th1rt3en feels vintage, from the familiar political themes on "We the People" and the tightly wound, Dio-esque riffing on "Public Enemy No. 1" to the soft, melodramatic military snare intro of "Never Dead," which eventually explodes into a wicked blast of retro-thrash that feels positively invigorating, not redundant.
