Instead, we're getting a retelling. The veteran outfit's ninth full-length is saturated with their well-honed symbiotic onstage energy: closer 'Turn Off Your Brain And Yell' rings with absent audience noise as Brett Anderson's voice reverberates around an imaginary arena; 'Personality Disorder' shudders with intensity and performance; tempo shifts and hints of improv inject the title track with vital urgency. There's not so much luxurious orchestration or dark flamboyance underpinning 'Autofiction''s construction, but Suede maintain their magnitude through emotional craft - single '15 Again' is the perfect microcosm of 'Autofiction''s ups and downs, its euphoric chorus built around painstaking regret. Either touring like madmen or blazing away at their Maryland HQ with another album in their sights, the band's last three decades have been a model of rock'n'roll purity and huge, life affirming tunes. As a result, it comes as no surprise whatsoever that Sunrise On Slaughter Beach is another joyous conflagration of riffs, grooves and bittersweet wit. This is, after all, what Clutch do. Nine songs deep and noticeably sharper and snappier than 2018's Book Of Bad Decisions, Clutch's 13th album offers a snapshot of the band at their most intense and energetic: almost certainly the result of being stuck at home and denied the opportunity to do what comes naturally. Widely showcased on tour this year, opener Red Alert (Boss Metal Zone) is a gritty, full-pelt return to undiluted rock fury. Done and dusted in under three minutes, it's the most punk thing Clutch have done in years. Even more inspired is We Strive For Excellence: a jittery stream of Neil Fallon aphorisms tied to some of the simplest and most effective riffing Clutch have written in an age. However, on an album, it can be easy for it to sound like nothing has changed. On the other hand, this only works until the singer is replaced. Then the difference is noticeable. This is the case for TRIAL. Having added the country tag of (Swe) to their name 2017 in order to distinguish themselves from the many other bands who go under that name, their new album Feed The Fire is the first with new vocalist Arthur W. Andersson. It is also the band's first album since 2017's Motherless. However, they didn't just spring the new vocalist onto fans. Instead, they released 2021's Sisters Of The Moon EP to serve as something of an introduction for Andersson. Even though fans have been introduced to the new vocalist via an EP, there is something different about an album. Thankfully, fans needn't have worried. Despite the slow introduction song, Tria Prima, this album goes full force. It is almost as if the first song was a calm before the storm. Sulphery starts off with a riveting guitar solo before Andersson's voice comes in. He sounds fantastic, and his voice suits the music perfectly.
