Dopo aver vinto l'oro alle Olimpiadi di Parigi nel 1924 nei 400 piani, Eric Liddell fa ritorno in Cina, dove è nato (da una coppia di genitori missionari protestanti) e insegna ai ragazzi locali. Nel 1937, però, i giapponesi invadono il Paese e, consapevole del pericolo, Liddell manda la moglie Florence e le due figlie al sicuro in Canada. Ad interpretare Francesca, sessantenne "esodata" che finirà ad elemosinare per necessità e protesta, è un’inedita Daniela Poggi, che festeggia 40 anni di carriera con un ruolo delicato e complesso, che le ha già permesso di trionfare come miglior attrice protagonista in tutti i festival in cui è stato presentato il film. L’ESODO nasce da un’idea del regista Ciro Formisano, qui al suo debutto in un lungometraggio, che ha sposato la causa di quel numero sempre crescente di uomini e di donne che, con l’entrata in vigore della Legge dell’ex Ministro Fornero e il suo innalzamento dell’età pensionabile, si sono improvvisamente trovati in un limbo: troppo vecchi per il lavoro e troppo giovani per la pensione, senza reddito e senza ammortizzatori sociali.

Le giornate scorrono tranquille nel centro anziani “La Serenissima”. Chi gioca a carte, chi a bocce, chi a sudoku, chi si diletta a fare cruciverba. La placida atmosfera di un giorno come tanti altri viene però sconvolta dal ricovero in ospedale di Edda, settantatreenne, curata e distinta, anche lei ospite del centro, che ha accusato un malore causato dal forte stress per aver perso i suoi risparmi scommettendo illegalmente. La donna era preoccupata per i problemi economici della figlia e aveva tentato disperatamente di aiutarla con una bella vincita. Quando i compagni del centro vengono a conoscenza delle sue difficoltà, decidono maldestramente di rapinare il Bingo Avana, un luogo dove trascorrono abitualmente alcune ore per spezzare la monotonia della vita quotidiana.
