Trama Il quartetto vocale di Homer: Alla festa del baratto di Springfield, Bart e Lisa rimangono colpiti dalla presenza di un album musicale del gruppo I Re Acuti, con Homer, Apu, Barney e Skinner raffigurati in copertina. Dopo aver chiesto spiegazioni al padre, Homer racconta loro la storia che avvenne nell'estate del 1985, quando insieme a Skinner, il commissario Winchester ed Apu si riuniva quotidianamente alla Taverna di Boe, dove cantavano il brano Addio mia bimba di Miami assistiti da Boe e Barney in quella che all'epoca era battezzata Moe's Cavern. Durante un'esibizione, i quattro vennero notati da Nigel, un manager, che, colpito dalla loro bravura, cercò di far intraprendere loro la scalata al successo. A farne le spese fu, però, Winchester, eliminato dal quartetto perché a detta sua avrebbe reso il gruppo simile ai Village People; dopo un casting infruttuoso, il suo posto venne preso da Barney. I fan accolsero malamente il cambio, ma dopo un primo spettacolo cambiarono parere. Il nome del gruppo diventò I Re Acuti (nella versione statunitense The Be Sharp). Con il singolo Bimba a bordo, composto da Homer, in breve tempo il gruppo ottenne un grande successo, esibendosi in concerti in tutto il mondo e vincendo un Grammy Award. Raggiunto l'apice del successo, però, il gruppo iniziò ad attraversare un momento difficile, a causa dell'evoluzione delle varie personalità del gruppo; comprendendo di non essere più di moda, i quattro decisero di separarsi e di ritornare alle loro attività. Dopo aver raccontato questa storia, Homer decide di richiamare gli altri componenti del gruppo per un ultimo concerto sul tetto del bar di Boe (parodia di quello dei Beatles sul tetto della Apple Records), richiamando l'attenzione dei passanti. Originariamente avrebbe dovuto avere una lunghezza maggiore, ma lo scarso successo incontrato indusse la casa produttrice ad interrompere l'edizione. In Italia è stato pubblicato dalla Granata Press con il titolo Battle Angel Alita. L'anime, essendo una riduzione, è poco fedele al manga, del quale narra in maniera solo parziale avvenimenti che vanno dal primo al quinto volume dell'edizione italiana. Il nome Black Jack non ha niente a che vedere con l'omonimo gioco di carte, ma richiama la bandiera pirata con il teschio, chiamata appunto Black Jack[1]. Infatti il protagonista è simile ad un pirata: taglia con il bisturi e arraffa i soldi (che in realtà raccoglie per scopi benefici). Quello che rende Black Jack un chirurgo ricercato è la sua abilità straordinaria che gli permette di curare malattie considerate incurabili da tutti gli altri medici. Black Jack è aiutato da una fida assistente, Pinoko. Nell'orbita di Kuro'o Hazama (vero nome di Black Jack) ruotano molti personaggi, come lo stesso Tezuka (diventato anche lui medico, con licenza). Nella versione anime esiste un filone narrativo più preciso, con la comparsa di personaggi come Sharoku (amico di Pinoko), del proprietario del locale in cui Black Jack va a bere, e di Largo, il cane di Pinoko (già presente in un capitolo del manga).
