The meticulous conductor only ever conducted a highly selected repertoire and among his very few audio and video recordings are only seven complete operas. The Zefirelli staging is the only premiere that Kleiber ever conducted. In December 1978, the masterly Franco Zefirelli created a colourful and atmospheric imagery while the musical genius of Kleiber drew from the music a rhythmic vitality and subtle passion that never lost its transparency and lightness. Carlos Kleiber conducted an extraordinary cast. Plácido Domingo, still the young lyrical tenor, starred as "Don Jose", and Elena Obraztsova gave a wonderful natural "Carmen", a far cry from the usual she-devil erotic cliché. The cast was completed by the young Isobel Buchanan who stood in at this production at short notice and included Yuri Mazurok who was later to become a high ranking Verdi baritone. The Viennese audience in the opera house hailed the performance as a triumph. "The applause", according to the "Süddeutsche Zeitung", "threatened to last as long as a full-length opera", and the legend of Carlos Kleiber's Vienna "Carmen" was born. Nearly 35 years has passed since then, and the Vienna State Opera has seen many a performance of the Zeffirelli production of "Carmen", with singers who were certainly no less eminent than the first cast - but none of them have achieved the cult status the first night enjoys in the memories of opera- lovers. The reason for it surely lies in the conductor Carlos Kleiber, who directed that première and stamped it with his own personality. In other words, the concert initially took place on the last day of the year. By 1941, however, it was being held on 1 January, when the Vienna Philharmonic established a tradition that continues to flourish to this day. The list of names of leading conductors who have led the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concerts reads like a veritable who's who of great maestros: including Herbert von Karajan, Lorin Maazel, Claudio Abbado, Carlos Kleiber, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Seiji Ozawa, Mariss Jansons, and Franz Welser-Möst. It is not least thanks to this illustrious succession of great conductors that the Vienna New Year's Concert remains unique, ushering in the New Year in a way that has often been imitated but never equalled. Its universal popularity is undoubtedly due to the direct - or deferred - live broadcast from the flower-filled Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. The first broadcast went out on Eurovision in 1959, the first colour relay in 1967. Now the concert is shown in countries throughout almost the entire world. It continues to be works by members of the Strauss family - Johann Strauss Father and Son as well as Eduard and Josef Strauss - that are central to this media event. Old favourites from their output are heard alongside others that have never been recorded or are only rarely heard; all of them programmed around two fixed points in the concert: the Blue Danube Waltz and the Radetzky March. Mariss Jansons ranks among the outstanding podium personalities of our time. He has been the Chief Conductor of the Chor und Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks since 2003. After several exceptionally successful seasons, his contract was prolonged until 2018. Until recently he was also the chief conductor of the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest in Amsterdam (2004-2015) and held both prestigious positions of a chief conductor at both orchestras. Unter den zahlreichen Vertonungen, die das lateinische Gedicht seit seiner Entstehung im 13. Jahrhundert erfahren hat, sticht Antonin Dvořáks Werk in gleich mehrfacher Hinsicht heraus. Zum einen ist es mit etwa achtzig Minuten Spielzeit eine der umfassendsten Versionen des zehnstrophigen Gedichts, aber vor allem die opulente Orchestrierung - ein Chor und vier Solisten ergänzen das Orchester - die tief empfundene Frömmigkeit, der getragene Gesamtduktus, der immer wieder von dynamischen und dramatischen Momenten durchbrochen wird, machen Dvořáks STABAT MATER zu einem besonderen musikalischen Erlebnis. Eindrücklich verbindet es Hoffnung und Leid, getragene, trauernde Momente in Moll, die die erste Hälfte des Werkes dominieren, mit der aufblühenden Zuversicht in Dur, die in der zweiten Hälfte durchblitzen. Die Entstehung des Werks von der ersten Skizze im Februar 1876 bis zur Vollendung der Partitur im November 1877 wurde von großen Schicksalsschlägen in Dvořáks Leben begleitet. Im Dezember 1875 starb Tochter Josefa kurz nach der Geburt, im Spätsommer 1877 verlor das Ehepaar Dvořák die elfmonatige Tochter Ružena und kurz darauf Sohn Otakar. In der tiefen Trauer um seine Kinder nahm Dvořák die Arbeit an seinem STABAT MATER nach einer mehrmonatigen Pause wieder auf. Die Uraufführung des Werkes im Dezember 1880 in Prag markiert zugleich den internationalen Durchbruch Dvořáks. Die Neue Zürcher Zeitung NZZ bezeichnete Jansons Interpretation von Dvořáks STABAT MATER als einen „Höhepunkt des diesjährigen Luzerner Osterfestivals". „Die absteigenden Halbtöne des Beginns erzeugten berührende Dringlichkeit [.] und der finale Ruf nach dem Paradies suggerierte strahlende Gewissheit", zeigt sie sich begeistert. „Zuletzt gehörte das Festival den Gästen aus München", findet auch der Landbote, „Wie sich da konturenklare Zeichnung und malerische Weichheit verbinden konnten, war ein außergewöhnliches Hörerlebnis". Auch die identisch besetzte Aufführung in München wurde gefeiert. „Die Solisten überraschten mit ihren Duetten bzw. Quartetten, in denen sich die Klangfarben der vier Sänger auf perfekte Weise miteinander verbanden", urteilt bachtrack und kommt zu dem Fazit „Jansons [.] machte diese Aufführung dank sorgfältiger Vorbereitung, differenzierter Phrasierung und ergreifender Dynamik zu einem großartigen Konzerterlebnis".
