L'anno è il 2062. La Terra è stata lasciata in rovina dopo il fallimento di un progetto di automazione del lavoro quando l'IA chiamata Artemis ha dichiarato guerra all'umanità. Una ragazza, Empress, si risveglia in un laboratorio di ricerca. Come uno dei tre guardiani sopravvissuti, deve distruggere l'ascensore orbitale prima che Artemis possa completarne la costruzione. Al suo primo giorno di scuola Mato Kuroi stringe amicizia con Yomi Takanashi, appena trasferitasi in città. Le due nel corso dell'anno scolastico diventano inseparabili al punto di iscriversi una al club di pallavolo e l'altra al club di basket, pur di stare nella stessa palestra. L'anno seguente però le due ragazze finiscono in due classi differenti e Yomi inizia a provare gelosia nei confronti di Mato che passa la maggior parte del proprio tempo con la compagna di club e di classe Yuu. Yomi però improvvisamente sparisce nel nulla, senza lasciare alcuna traccia di sé facendo cadere Mato nella depressione. Un giorno però Mato riceve un SMS vuoto dall'amica, ed impulsivamente si reca nel loro angolo preferito in città, dove trova un ciondolo per telefono cellulare che aveva regalato a Yomi tempo prima. Il ciondolo inizia a brillare e trasporta Mato in una dimensione parallela in cui incontra una strana ragazza chiamata Black Rock Shooter. Nella disperata ricerca di Yomi, Mato si fonde con Black Rock Shooter ed è costretta a combattere con Yomi, che è stata posseduta da un demone chiamato Dead Master. Il combattimento fra Black Rock Shooter e Dead Master era stato mostrato attraverso dei flashback nel corso dell'intero anime. Black Rock Shooter riesce a liberare Yomi, e sconfiggere Dead Master. Quando le due ragazze tornano nel loro mondo, si rendono però conto che Yuu ha assunto un comportamento strano.

TRAMA
Le protagoniste sono Mato e Yomi, due ragazze conosciutesi il primo giorno di scuola media e divenute, da allora, praticamente inseparabili. Arrivate al secondo anno, però, l'appartenenza a due club differenti e lo smistamento in classi separate mettono a dura prova il rapporto tra le due. In particolare, Yomi, consumata dalla gelosia, vede il proprio posto speciale nel cuore dell'amica insidiato da Yuu, la manager della squadra di basket, di cui Mato fa parte. Queste scene, rappresentanti la nascita e il successivo affievolirsi dell'intima amicizia tra Mato e Yomi, si alternano periodicamente con sequenze che vedono le due ragazze, riconoscibili nonostante un look molto più dark e aggressivo, affrontarsi in un mondo desolato, dalle tinte cupe e dalle atmosfere gotiche e decadenti.

Ma non è semplice prendere la decisione di cambiare vita e trasferirsi altrove, perché Sole soffre da sempre di disturbi di ansia: per lei compiere un qualunque, anche insignificante gesto può diventare un’impresa titanica. L’unica in grado di comprenderla e aiutarla è sempre stata Emma, la sua migliore amica, che però adesso non c’è più. È stata quest’ultima a scrivere la lettera che Sole riesce a leggere solo pochi giorni prima di compiere venticinque anni. È un’esortazione ad avere uno slancio di temerarietà: Sole dovrà stilare una lista delle piccole e grandi paure che la paralizzano e poi affrontarle una ad una. Dopo tanto tentennare, anche grazie al supporto e all’incoraggiamento di un nuovo gruppo di amiche e amici, Sole accetta. E da quel momento il suo viaggio diventa un cammino alla scoperta di sé.
