In un villaggio della Francia del '700 vive la radiosa Belle appassionata alla lettura e un po' stanca della vita ripetitiva che le è toccato in sorte di condurre. Un giorno il padre (un anziano inventore un po' eccentrico) chiede asilo in un castello non sapendo che lì vive la Bestia. Costui è un Principe che, in seguito ad un atto di egoismo, è stato trasformato in un animale. L'incantesimo si romperà solo se una fanciulla si innamorerà di lui prima che una rosa, contenuta in una campana di cristallo, perda l'ultimo petalo. Belle, che è oppressa dalla corte di Gaston, il bello e bullo del villaggio, va alla ricerca del padre e, trovatolo nel castello, si offre in ostaggio alla Bestia al suo posto. Da quel momento tra i due si sviluppa un non facile rapporto.

Il piccolo Artu', che fa lo sguattero nel castello di un Sir inglese, incontra il buon mago Merlino, che conosce quasi tutto il futuro e sa che Artu' sarà re. Senza dir niente al ragazzo, il mago lo prepara alla sua futura responsabilità, insegnandogli ad usare il cervello con saggezza, e per questo lo trasforma in diversi animali. Gli insegna anche che il bene deve avere il sopravvento sul male, vincendo con l'astuzia e il suo sapere una cattiva maga. Quando il ragazzo è pronto per regnare, gli si presenta l'occasione per estrarre la spada dalla roccia e viene proclamato re.

In una sala cinematografica si proietta un cinegiornale su un esploratore, Charles Muntz, che è tornato dall'America del Sud con lo scheletro di un uccello che la scienza ufficiale qualifica come falso. Muntz riparte per dimostrare la sua onestà. Un bambino occhialuto, Carl, è in sala. Muntz è il suo eroe. Incontrerà una bambina, Ellie, che ha la sua stessa passione. I due cresceranno insieme e si sposeranno. Un giorno però Carl si ritrova vedovo con la sua villetta circondata da un cantiere e con il sogno che i contrattempi della vita non hanno mai permesso a lui ed Ellie di realizzare: una casa in prossimità delle cascate citate da Muntz come luogo della sua scoperta. Un giorno un Giovane Esploratore bussa alla sua porta. Sarà con lui che Carl, senza volerlo, comincerà a realizzare il sogno.

Nick Clark, un ragazzo tossicodipendente, si sveglia in una chiesa abbandonata frequentata da altri come lui e cerca la sua compagna che, tra rumori strani e cadaveri, ritrova intenta a sbranare un cadavere e interessata a mangiare anche lui. Nick fugge dalla chiesa, ma viene investito da un'auto e trasportato in ospedale. Madison Clark, madre di Nick e counselour della Paul R. Williams High School, viene avvisata dell'accaduto mentre requisisce allo studente Tobias un coltello col quale il ragazzo vorrebbe difendersi da fantomatici mostri. Madison e il compagno Travis Manawa, altro insegnante della scuola, si recano in ospedale dove Nick, per paura di non essere creduto del motivo della sua fuga dalla chiesa, non rivela quanto realmente accaduto. 1: Stato confusionale

Tornati a casa, Travis decide di andare a recuperare la sua ex moglie Liza e il figlio Chris, mentre Madison va in cerca di medicine per il figlio che è sul punto di una crisi d'astinenza. Intanto in tutta Los Angeles le persone "ammalate" vengono uccise dai poliziotti e la popolazione, all'oscuro di quanto stia accadendo, interpreta il gesto come un sopruso e inizia a protestare. 2: Scelte difficili

Tornati a casa, Travis decide di andare a recuperare la sua ex moglie Liza e il figlio Chris, mentre Madison va in cerca di medicine per il figlio che è sul punto di una crisi d'astinenza. Il negozio dei Salazar deve essere evacuato: nella fuga la signora Salazar, Griselda, si ferisce gravemente ad una caviglia. Il gruppo riesce comunque a raggiungere il pick-up di Travis e a fuggire dalla folla che intanto viene caricata dalla polizia. Si recano all'ospedale, ma all'ingresso la polizia li fa allontanare mentre spara ad alcuni vaganti. Quando arrivano a casa di Madison, devono affrontare un vagante che viene ucciso da Daniel Salazar con un fucile recuperato da Nick nella casa vicina. Si accorgono che quel vagante era il vicino Peter, e anche la vicina Susan si è trasformata in una vagante. 3: Coprifuoco

Chris, scorge quelli che sembrano segnali luminosi da una costruzione fuori dalla zona recintata e lo riferisce al padre, ma Travis, fiducioso verso i militari, ritiene che non sia possibile e attribuisce tutto alla fantasia del ragazzo. Quest'ultimo lo racconta allora a Madison che, dopo aver verificato la presenza delle luci sulla collina, decide di uscire dalla recinzione e vi trova cadaveri di persone anche non infette, sospettando che i militari nascondano qualcosa. Intanto Liza si prende cura dei malati spacciandosi per infermiera, benché sia solo una studentessa, finché non arriva una dottoressa inviata dal governo che le chiede tuttavia di continuare a fingere per aiutarla. 4: Bisogno di normalità

Il soldato convince Travis a lasciarlo andare perché Daniel intende probabilmente ucciderlo una volta che non sarà più utile. Daniel attira la mandria di zombie dello stadio all'ospedale e crea un diversivo per infiltrarsi. Il gruppo riesce infine a ricongiungersi con Nick e il suo nuovo compare Strand. Anche Liza, decisa a non partire coi soldati per andare a salvare Nick, ritrova il gruppo e li conduce dalla dottoressa Exner che nel frattempo ha sottoposto i pazienti ormai abbandonati dai soccorsi all'eutanasia prima che si trasformino. La dottoressa indica loro una via di fuga, ma ha perso la voglia di vivere e non intende fuggire. 6: Stanno arrivando
