Arguably, the Blood, Sweat & Tears that made this self-titled second album -- consisting of five of the eight original members and four newcomers, including singer David Clayton-Thomas -- was really a different group from the one that made Child Is Father to the Man, which was done largely under the direction of singer/songwriter/keyboard player/arranger Al Kooper. They had certain similarities to the original: the musical mixture of classical, jazz, and rock elements was still apparent, and the interplay between the horns and the keyboards was still occurring, even if those instruments were being played by different people. Kooper was even still present as an arranger on two tracks, notably the initial hit "You've Made Me So Very Happy." But the second BS&T, under the aegis of producer James William Guercio, was a less adventurous unit, and, as fronted by Clayton-Thomas, a far more commercial one. Not only did the album contain three songs that neared the top of the charts as singles -- "Happy," "Spinning Wheel," and "And When I Die" -- but the whole album, including an arrangement of "God Bless the Child" and the radical rewrite of Traffic's "Smiling Phases," was wonderfully accessible. Toward the end of the praise surrounding their third album, 1991's Seeds of Love, Curt Smith left the band. Roland Orzabal was left to sail the ship alone, and the strong success dwindled years later. However, this dozen-track compilation showcases some of the band's early tracks heavily dominated by pulsating bass drops and heavy synth beats. "Pale Shelter" and "Mad World" from their 1982 debut The Hurting moved toward the soul-defining musical maturation found on 1985's groundbreaking staple Songs From the Big Chair. The Top Ten hits are undoubtedly featured: "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," "Shout," and the more obscure "Mothers Talk." The luscious "Head Over Heels" cuts short of its closing guitar work, a disappointment in the grand scheme of Tears for Fears' synth-dominated sound. Such layered riffs separated the rawness from the fluffy new wave aspect. "Sowing the Seeds of Love" marked the band's own branded progressive rock & roll, but "Woman in Chains," the gospel-tinged cut featuring guest vocals from Oleta Adams, was their most spiritual effort. Essentially, the dozen-track collection is a perfect look at what Tears for Fears did for music during the '80s until the mid-'90s. Remarkably, it's fueled in part by the 2017 death of Roland Orzabal's wife and partner of many years and his denial about losing her. "I think that when you've been close to someone for decades, they are living within you as well as without," he has said. "And consciously I did not believe she would die, though subconsciously I was, without doubt, preparing for the inevitable, arming myself against the future shock." The title track is shimmering and mysterious, with strident drums and alien beeps but also vocals like a soothing balm. "Winter done, they'll soon be gone/ From this unforgiving place/ To that vague and distant void/ Where the sunlight splits the eye," Orzabal sings of that threshold from life to death. It is heartbreaking, but also hopeful. "Please Be Happy" is incredibly candid-and one of their prettiest tracks: "These days it's like a wave is breaking over you/ Dragging you in with the undertow/ If you lay among the graves you will see other ghosts." And "No Small Thing," about facing the heartbreak of losing your love, is a stunner. Stripped-back acoustic guitar builds to the dreamy psychedelia Tears for Fears has always done so well, the whole thing swelling to a bursting-the-seams crescendo by the end. "Long, Long, Long Time" shows how the duo have always been masters of dynamics, its hymn-like organ giving way to a monster chorus; the song also reminds you just how much Sam Smith owes Curt Smith for their angelic style. "Master Plan" giddily dips into the band's longtime love of Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles, and "Break the Man" is catchy jangle pop touched with moody strings. "My Demons," meanwhile, is a nasty piece of work, in the best way (one akin to Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"), with Orzabal drilling the doomed lyrics: "Why is my name in lights when my name is spelled wrong . People always find you when your cell phone is on." Smith comes in to sweeten up the chorus, but he sounds thrillingly stretched to his limits as the rhythm gallops like a sweating horse. Remarkably, it's fueled in part by the 2017 death of Roland Orzabal's wife and partner of many years and his denial about losing her. "I think that when you've been close to someone for decades, they are living within you as well as without," he has said. "And consciously I did not believe she would die, though subconsciously I was, without doubt, preparing for the inevitable, arming myself against the future shock." The title track is shimmering and mysterious, with strident drums and alien beeps but also vocals like a soothing balm. "Winter done, they'll soon be gone/ From this unforgiving place/ To that vague and distant void/ Where the sunlight splits the eye," Orzabal sings of that threshold from life to death. It is heartbreaking, but also hopeful. "Please Be Happy" is incredibly candid-and one of their prettiest tracks: "These days it's like a wave is breaking over you/ Dragging you in with the undertow/ If you lay among the graves you will see other ghosts." And "No Small Thing," about facing the heartbreak of losing your love, is a stunner. Stripped-back acoustic guitar builds to the dreamy psychedelia Tears for Fears has always done so well, the whole thing swelling to a bursting-the-seams crescendo by the end. "Long, Long, Long Time" shows how the duo have always been masters of dynamics, its hymn-like organ giving way to a monster chorus; the song also reminds you just how much Sam Smith owes Curt Smith for their angelic style. "Master Plan" giddily dips into the band's longtime love of Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles, and "Break the Man" is catchy jangle pop touched with moody strings. "My Demons," meanwhile, is a nasty piece of work, in the best way (one akin to Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"), with Orzabal drilling the doomed lyrics: "Why is my name in lights when my name is spelled wrong . People always find you when your cell phone is on." Smith comes in to sweeten up the chorus, but he sounds thrillingly stretched to his limits as the rhythm gallops like a sweating horse.
