Each album is therefore a reflection of the particular guitarist involved, resulting in a stylistic inconsistency that failed to attract a loyal following for the band. As such, their 1983 debut, No Parole from Rock 'N' Roll, sounds a lot like guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen's later solo albums. Still, this is an excellent record, successfully fusing Bonnet's tuneful screaming, Jimmy Waldo's tasteful Rainbow-derived keyboard textures, and Malmsteen's blinding dexterity and speed. The nearly perfect "Island in the Sun" is the album's absolute high point, and it's a wonder the song didn't become a huge hit. And while "Jet to Jet" sounds like little more than a Rainbow outtake, the epic "Kree Nakoorie" showcases Malmsteen and Waldo at their best. Other highlights include the amusing "Too Young to Die, Too Drunk to Live" and "Bigfoot," with its scorching Malmsteen riff. Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy occupies a much-needed middle ground, providing 19 songs on a generous single disc. This, like The Original Bad Company Anthology, focuses solely on the six albums Bad Company cut for Swan Song, which means there's nothing from their late-'80s/early-'90s run on Atco, even though "No Smoke Without a Fire," "Holy Water," "If You Needed Somebody," and "How About That" are also owned by WEA and could easily have been included. So, this is all a matter of aesthetics: a decision to highlight the band's big, brawny arena rockers, the best of which ("Can't Get Enough," "Bad Company," "Ready for Love," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Shooting Star," "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy") are quintessential classic rock staples. The 77-minute disc mixes up seven of the nine tracks from Bad Attitude (including the British hits "Modern Girl" and "Piece of the Action") with six of the 11 tracks from Blind Before I Stop (including the British hit "Rock 'N' Roll Mercenaries"), then concludes with two songs from Live at Wembley, versions of the Bat Out of Hell numbers "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" and "Bat Out of Hell." This period in Meat Loaf's recording career stands as a valley in between the massive success of Bat Out of Hell (1977) and the massive comeback of Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell (1993), and it finds him working without his songwriting partner Jim Steinman. (Actually, he did record two Steinman songs on Bad Attitude, but they are the two songs from that album not included here.) On his own, sometimes contributing to the songwriting himself, he makes conventional hard rock with synth pop and Euro-disco elements, still singing in his passionate tenor.
