In the two years leading up to the highly anticipated title, the British singer-songwriter had soared to incredible heights, becoming a global star with such hits as "Father and Son," "Wild World," "Where Do The Children Play?" "Morning Has Broken" and "Peace Train." The songs on Catch Bull At Four find the artist grappling with his dizzying rise to fame, while, at the same time, delving deeper into his spiritual journey. While the band had already transitioned gracefully from their mod-ish British Invasion origins (and the heavy production thumb of Shel Talmy) into something more adventurous and artful with 1968's The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, that masterpiece's two iconic follow-ups (Arthur and Lola) found Ray Davies' weird twin penchants for acidic lyricism and music hall song structures becoming more and more dominant in the group's sound. By the time the 1971 soundtrack to Percy rolled around, U.S. audiences had all but forgotten about the band, who soon found themselves facing the same fate in their native England. And although Davies would delve further and further into high-concept theatricality (and deeper commercial irrelevance) with a series of four albums in the mid-70s, there was a brief interregnum in 1971 and 1972 when it looked as if the Kinks had seized upon a creatively successful way to synthesize all of their influences. While 1971's Muswell Hillbillies is more often notched into various "Best Of..." lists, there's a strong case to be made that its follow-up, Everybody's In Show-Biz, does a much better job at showing off the band's strengths at the time. To be sure, like nearly every Kinks album, this one has a couple of bafflingly dumb songs; "Maximum Consumption" is another list-of-foods song that is the mirror image of the equally stupid "Skin and Bone" (originally on Muswell, but also here in a live version), and "Motorway" is a song about . driving (with its own short list of foods one may eat while driving). While these dumb-but-lovely tunes are par for the course for a Kinks album, the more typical Kinks tunes here-"Supersonic Rocket Ship," "Hot Potatoes" (someone please feed Ray Davies!)-are deceptively breezy, as their easy-rocking structures are played as wryly as their lyrics. A cut like "You Don't Know My Name" shouldn't be as good as it is, and it definitely shouldn't be kicked into an even higher gear by an unexpectedly perfect flute solo in the bridge. Given the relatively higher level that most of the material here is working at, it shouldn't be surprising that Show-Biz's high points are some of the best songs the Kinks ever put to vinyl. And while the emotionally note-perfect sentimentality of "Celluloid Heroes" justifiably gets the lion's share of attention, the sly and subtle "Sitting In My Hotel" is nearly as effective. Two reissues mark the album's 50th anniversary. The Deluxe 2022 Remaster version is relatively spare when it comes to extras; of course the live set from the Muswell Hillbillies tour that was included in the original vinyl version appears intact, but beyond that, the bonus material is limited to just a couple of new mixes of "Celluloid Heroes." The Legacy Edition features previously unreleased studio outtakes and more live cuts from their two-night stand at Carnegie Hall in March 1972. Back In The World Of Adventures was the band´s first proper album together and was released in 1995 to wide critical acclaim in the progressive rock community. The line up on the band´s debut featured keyboardist Tomas Bodin, who was the perfect match for the adventurous Stolt. Saxophonist Ulf Wallander contributes his own special brand of magic to the mix while drummer Jaime Salazar keeps the rhythm together with consummate cool. "Roine Stolt's voice is strong, full, passionate, and delightfully accented. The Flower Kings' lyrics are heady, compelling, and hook city. The guitar work is extremely melodic and rates right up there with anything Brian May or David Gilmour has offered. Stolt is expertly meshed in this band with brother Michael on bass and voice. Tomas Bodin excels on Hammond organ, Mellotron, piano, and flute. Hans Bruniusson plays percussion alongside Jaime Salazar on drum kit, while Ulf Wallander guests on sax. The ten songs here are split between five instrumentals and five featuring great vocals mingled with extended instrumental bridges and a variety of sonic excursions. Each piece is a rocking, swirling matrix of multifaceted sound, with the opening "World of Adventures" a particular highlight. Take the best of Crack the Sky, Pink Floyd, early Genesis, and the slick cool pop/rock of Queen and Prince's 1999, mix everything together in the cauldron of Stolt's vision of world peace, and out comes a fresh batch of magic." As the title suggested the music was a nostalgic nod to the 70´s, paying tribute to the bands that originally influenced them. The band was clearly beginning to build their own identity on this release with a mixture of bombastic epics and melancholic ballads. A feast for lovers of Hammond and Mellotron. "Retropolis is the album that brought the Flower Kings from an interesting underground progressive rock band to an act that simply couldn't be ignored by anyone interested in the genre's 1990s revival. Roine Stolt and consorts' aim for Retropolis was to dive a little more into vintage progressive forms (retro) and, indeed, this album is the most nostalgic and closer-to-the-roots-sounding of the band's catalog. From the Pink Floyd-shaped "Rhythm of the Sea" to the poignant Yes-like hymn "There Is More to This World," the Flower Kings sound like they are paying tribute to the groups that brought them to do what they are doing, without ever falling into plagiarism or sacrificing the band's own identity. "Melting Pot," "The Judas Kiss," and the powerful instrumental "Retropolis" are the album's other highlights. Very strong composition-wise, Retropolis lacked some cohesion. It is one of the band's most song-oriented albums (with The Flower King). In comparison, the following effort Stardust We Are will have a stronger identity but at times weaker material." Sein Werk ist Zeitgeschichte − unterhaltsam, politisch, romantisch und tiefgründig zugleich. So etwas schaffen nur sehr wenige Künstler. Seine Arbeit umfasst mehr als 40 Platten (Live- und Studioalben, sowie DVDs), und ein Großteil seines Werkes wurde nun für die Programm-Initiative "HighResAudio" neu in 24-Bit gemastert. "Udo Lindenberg Mastered for HighResAudio" ist bis dato das umfangreichste Projekt, welches in Deutschland in dieses neue Format gebracht wurde. Das Ganze geschah in Düsseldorf, in der Skyline Tonfabrik, wo uns Peter "Jem" Seifert und Kai Blankenberg Einblicke in den Prozess und die Hintergründe des Projekts geben. Die meisten Master waren auf 1/4″-Analogbändern. Warner Music und Universal haben uns ihr komplettes Archiv zugänglich gemacht. Alle Bänder liefen auf 38 cm/Sekunde, teilweise mit Dolby A aufgenommen. Das war schon ein irrer Moment, als wir das erste 1/4″-Band aufgelegt haben: Ball Pompös von 1974, in dem Jahr bin ich geboren! Es lief einwandfrei ohne Abrieb und klang tierisch: Gänsehaut! Nach wie vor eine meiner Lieblings-Udo-Platten. Für jedes Band hat Oliver Gregor (Rockruepel) die Bandmaschine optimal neu eingemessen. Beim Aussteuern der Wandler haben wir auf ca. 6 dB Headroom geachtet und haben ganz leise oder laute Bänder mit einem analogen Verstärker etwas angehoben oder abgesenkt. When issued, because of its mid-price it was excluded from the main album charts in the UK but topped the mid-price charts rubbing shoulders with Jim Reeves & Mantovani. Atlantic in the USA didn't even bother to release it. By then, the band had broken up & the label had already been alerted to the likelihood of a new King Crimson line-up promised for later in the year. Like the later live album, USA, Earthbound remained unavailable in the early CD era, with both finally being released in 2002 on CD. Ironically this non-availability served to enhance interest in the album while DGM's live releases made fans aware that there was a larger story to be told of this line-up's history. When Robert Fripp was asked to guest on the second Grinderman project, Nick Cave noted: "I wanted to work with Robert Fripp because he has done some of the most uniquely unsettling guitar work I have ever heard along with some of the most delicate and finessed" explained Cave. "I grew up listening to a lot of the King Crimson stuff. The vinyl copy of the phenomenal live album Earthbound, is one of my most treasured possessions." "Earthbound is still going to jar listeners who are accustomed to the group's meticulous studio productions or the elegant, classically-oriented sound that they cultivated in that milieu; allowing for its limitations, however, it does represent the final incarnation of the longest lasting lineup of the early group, and a side of their work that was otherwise lost to posterity." Actually, some of the straight blues items sound kind of turgid, but that's more than made up for by several cuts that rate among their finest and most disturbing work. The seven-minute title track was a car-cruising classic that celebrated both the glamour and seediness of Los Angeles; the other long cut, the brooding, jazzy "Riders on the Storm," was the group at its most melodic and ominous. It and the far bouncier "Love Her Madly" were hit singles, and "The Changeling" and "L'America" count as some of their better little-heeded album tracks. He had released a record on his own in 1978, but About Face is much more accessible. Gilmour has a stellar band backing him, including Jeff Porcaro (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), and Anne Dudley (synthesizer). The songs on About Face show a pop sensibility that Pink Floyd rarely was concerned with achieving. Although the album didn't attract the attention of a Floyd release, several cuts did manage to get airplay. "Until We Sleep" is rife with shimmering synthesizers and cavernous drums, and "Blue Light" was a minor pop hit, with Gilmour's trademark delay-drenched guitar giving way to a driving, horn-laced rocker. Pete Townshend wrote two of the tracks: "Love on the Air" and the propulsive "All Lovers Are Deranged." Of course, there's more than enough of Gilmour's fluid guitar playing to satisfy, including the gorgeous "Murder," a gentle acoustic track that explodes with some fiery organ by Steve Winwood and concludes with a fierce coda.
