Lennon's first proper solo album was issued in December 1970 and is a raw, stripped-back delve into the psyche of the ex-Beatle. The lyrics of songs like Isolation, Mother, Working Class Hero and Hold On are Lennon exploring (and exposing) his personal issues, including the pain of losing his mother, twice - once when she abandoned him, leaving him in the care of his Aunt 'Mimi' Smith, and then when she was killed in a road traffic accident (in 1958). Mixes are broken into different categories. Ultimate Mixes are the most faithful to the originals but are generally sonically clearer and also focus on increasing the clarify of John's vocals. Outtakes are presented in the style of a 'rough listening mix' and Elements mixes are designed to bring out aspects previously buried in a mix. Evolution Documentary mixes are an aaudio montage that takes you through the development of each song from demo to master recording via "instructions, rehearsals, recordings, multitrack exploration and studio chatter. As if that wasnt enough theres demos - both home and studio - plus jams, some of which take in old rock n roll numbers once covered by The Beatles (Honey Don't, Matchbox) and even a couple of Fab songs themselves in Get Back and Ive Got A Feeling. This album was the most commercially successful of the band's career, reaching the top 40 albums in Billboard Magazine. It stands as the culmination of the band's maturity, following the successes of 'In A Glass House' & 'The Power & The Glory'. Having toured Europe & North America non-stop in the years prior to this release with artists like Jethro Tull, Yes, Zappa etc, the band had gone from strength to strength. By the time 'Free Hand' was released Gentle Giant had become a major headliner in their own right. All the members were multi-instrumentalists and the band were never afraid of surprising an audience with a 4 part recorder ensemble followed by a vibraphone solo, all the while rocking the audience and thoroughly enjoying themselves onstage. Gentle Giant albums featured many songs with both literary subjects as well as social and personal commentary on life as rock musicians. 'Free Hand' has more than most. The title of the album and first track were so named as the band had just changed record labels and management and felt unshackled by prior contractual obligations. Putting these issues behind them upon its first release, Gentle Giant embarked on an extensive tour of North America and Europe, plus a short tour of the UK, to promote the album. The incredible range of Gentle Giant's music is evident throughout this album. From the intricate vocal fretwork of 'On Reflection' and the delicate medieval flavour of 'Talybont,' the Celtic-tinged rock of 'Time To Kill' and the jagged rhythms of 'Just The Same,' all those diverse elements which made the band so strikingly original are skillfully blended and perfectly executed. Award winning producer and musician Steven Wilson has added his delicate touch in remixing Free Hand in Dolby Atmos & 5.1 surround sound. His tonal range and painstaking attention to sound quality make 'Free Hand' sound as fresh today as it did on first release. A fitting tribute to the compositional skills and expertise of five dedicated musicians. Steven Wilson's remixed Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround version of 'Free Hand' is accompanied by custom animated visuals for each track on BluRay. The front three channels are used very well for the piano and orchestra, with the sides and surrounds utilized for ambient spill over and acoustic hall effects. This is a very pleasing recording. Because Jero tends not to supply a lot of supporting information in his insert booklets (and, as an aside, also uses an almost illegible cursive font in them), it's unclear whether this is licensed from one of Brendel's many compact disc collaborations with Mackerras. One way or the other, this is an amazingly clear and clean recording, with a fulsome tone emanating from the piano and some wonderfully warm reed and wind sounds emanating from the orchestra. Fidelity is excellent throughout all frequency ranges, with no anomalies whatsoever to report. Unlike one of the user reviews of this title, I experienced no hang-ups or delays loading this Blu-ray on my PS3, and it played perfectly from start to finish. The album has been newly remastered for this release and the deluxe box set includes both a CD and a gatefold vinyl version. A brand new Dolby Atmos Mix is included, along with the original 5.1 and the hi-res stereo, however these are spread across two blu-rays and a DVD which is an odd thing to do. The Quad mix (included in the 2011 Immersion box) does not feature and the unreleased tracks from that 12-year-old collection (the 1972 'Early Mix' of the album and the extra audio tracks such as demos and the 'The Hard Way' from Household Objects) are also not part of this new package. The Live at Wembley Empire Pool show (from November 1974) has been newly remastered and is made available on vinyl for the first time. The 50th anniversary deluxe box includes this live performance on vinyl and CD and both of those elements are available separately, with artwork featuring an original 1973 line-drawn cover by George Hardie.
