Not only did the album introduce the world to Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney, and Mike Starr, it was also a pivotal album in the era of grunge music. Facelift has sold over 2 million copies in the US alone and includes the hits "Man in the Box," "Bleed the Freak," "We Die Young," and "Sea of Sorrow." "When Alice in Chains' debut album, Facelift, was released in 1990, about a year before Nirvana's Nevermind, the thriving Seattle scene barely registered on the national musical radar outside of underground circles (although Soundgarden's major-label debut, Louder Than Love, was also released that year and brought them a Grammy nomination). That started to change when MTV jumped all over the video for "Man in the Box," giving the group a crucial boost and helping to pave the way for grunge's popular explosion toward the end of 1991. Although their dominant influences -- Black Sabbath, the Stooges -- were hardly unique on the Seattle scene, Alice in Chains were arguably the most metallic of grunge bands, which gave them a definite appeal outside the underground; all the same, the group's sinister, brooding, suffocating sound resembled little else gaining wide exposure on the 1990 hard rock scene. Neither hedonistic nor especially technically accomplished, Alice in Chains' songs were mostly slow, oppressive dirges with a sense of melody that was undeniable, yet which crept along over the murky sludge of the band's instrumental attack in a way that hardly fit accepted notions of what made hard rock catchy and accessible. Although some parts of Facelift sink into turgid, ponderous bombast (particularly over the erratic second half), and the lyrics are sometimes immature, the overall effect is fresh, exciting, and powerful. While Alice in Chains would go on to do better and more consistent work, Facelift was one of the most important records in establishing an audience for grunge and alternative rock among hard rock and heavy metal listeners, and with its platinum sales certification, it also made Alice in Chains the first Seattle band to break through to a wider, less exclusively underground audience." It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively maintain the thematic coherence -- nearly every song is imbued with the morbidity, self-disgust, and/or resignation of a self-aware yet powerless addict. Cantrell's technically limited but inventive guitar work is by turns explosive, textured, and queasily disorienting, keeping the listener off balance with atonal riffs and off-kilter time signatures. Staley's stark confessional lyrics are similarly effective, and consistently miserable. Sometimes he's just numb and apathetic, totally desensitized to the outside world; sometimes his self-justifications betray a shockingly casual amorality; his moments of self-recognition are permeated by despair and suicidal self-loathing. Even given its subject matter, Dirt is monstrously bleak, closely resembling the cracked, haunted landscape of its cover art. The album holds out little hope for its protagonists (aside from the much-needed survival story of "Rooster," a tribute to Cantrell's Vietnam-vet father), but in the end, it's redeemed by the honesty of its self-revelation and the sharp focus of its music. Tutto ha inizio quando Danny (Martin Compston), ventenne, e Vic (Eddie Marsan), un uomo sulla quarantina, decidono di fare il colpaccio rapendo la figlia d’un ricco imprenditore. Così trasformano il loro appartamento in un vero e proprio bunker insonorizzato e ci portano la ragazza. Quello che sembra un piano facile per guadagnare una bella somma di denaro grazie al riscatto, diventa molto più complicato del previsto. Alice, infatti, non ha alcuna intenzione di assecondare i rapitori e, sebbene sia legata al letto, gli dà del filo da torcere. A un certo punto la giovane scopre che dietro a uno dei due passamontagna c'è Danny, con il quale ha da tempo una storia. Una volta venuto allo scoperto, il ragazzo le dice di stare al gioco e far finta di avere paura, così da poter alla fine scappare con i soldi. La situazione si complica perché anche Vic ha una relazione con Danny. Trama Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie (ふしぎの国のアリス Fushigi no Kuni no Alice?) è una serie televisiva anime prodotta da Nippon Animation e Apollo Film e ispirata molto liberamente al romanzo Le avventure di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie di Lewis Carroll. I personaggi che compaiono in queste avventure sono il Bruco Blu, che vive sopra un fungo a fumare una pipa e sa fare molte magie (per esempio può far rimpicciolire o crescere Alice di dimensione, donandole un pezzo del suo fungo) ed è l'informatore ufficiale del Paese delle Meraviglie, il Ghignagatto (con il potere di sparire e riapparire in questo o quel luogo o di rendere visibile sono alcune parti del suo corpo a suo piacimento), la lucertola Little Bill, il Cappellaio, la Lepre, il Ghiro, i gemelli Ciccia Pappa e Pappa Ciccia (in continuo conflitto tra loro), l'uovo parlante e dotato di arti Humpy Dumpy, ma soprattutto la regina di Cuori, sovrana del regno (piuttosto tiranna, ma più simpatica rispetto al romanzo originale e alle altre serie animate di Alice nel paese delle Meraviglie). Questa è sposata con il Re di Cuori (che si fa mettere sempre i piedi in testa dalla moglie per la sua mancanza di autorità maschile) e suo figlio è il Fante di Cuori (un bambino piuttosto goffo). Ha al suo seguito un esercito di soldati dotati di carte da gioco di cuori al posto del ventre, di cui si serve per portare in prigione questo o quell'abitante del Paese delle Meraviglie (nei primi tempi minacciava di tagliar loro la testa, fino a quando la ghigliottina non si è rotta). Al suo servizio ha anche il Jolly (anch'esso con la carta da gioco in luogo del ventre, con impressa una J), che funge da menestrello, buffone di corte e consigliere del Re di Cuori.
