In mezzo a loro, nella capitale di uno stato americano, arriva un giorno, in compagnia di Armando - l'uomo che l'ha protetto per vent'anni - uno scimpanzè intelligente, Cesare, figlio di Cornelius e Zira, uccisi dagli uomini nel timore che la loro specie, evoluta, potesse invadere la Terra. Scoperta casualmente la sua presenza (due poliziotti l'hanno udito parlare), Cesare (mentre Armando muore, precipitando da una finestra, per sottrarsi agli inquirenti) riesce per qualche tempo, dopo essere stato venduto al governatore Breck, a celare la propria identità e a organizzare, indignato per il disumano trattamento usato verso di loro, la rivolta delle scimmie. Catturato e condannato a morte, si salva, grazie all'aiuto di un consigliere negro dello stesso Breck, e passa all'azione. Armate di tutto punto e abilmente guidate da Casare, le scimmie conquistano, dopo aver sgominato interi reparti di poliziotti, il palazzo del governo.
