Now reunited longer than they were together during their original days as a trio, Dinosaur Jr. have, musically, aged better than just about any other indie-rock bands of the Lollapalooza era. As Stereogum astutely put it, J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph sound like "old friends reconnecting, not estranged old co-workers chasing a paycheck." It helps, too, that they were never exactly "cool" young guys or baby-faced pretty boys; if anything, they've grown into the weird old men they were always destined to be, and the music has stayed strong. On their first album in five years, you can hear how much fun they're having on songs like the bottom-heavy "I Met the Stones"-all '80s hair metal guitar and chugging drums that erupts into a squall, with Mascis' voice cutting through, rusty and serrated and as comforting as a weighted blanket, assuming that's your thing. (And if you're listening to a Dinosaur Jr. record, surely it is?) While Kurt Cobain sang "Oh well, whatever, nevermind," Mascis-one of Cobain's idols-has always had the voice that seems to embody the sentiment. But in reality, despite the laconic whine (one of the most identifiable voices of the past half-century), Mascis' heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics care a lot. "I can't take it/ Can't quite place it/ I won't make it alone," he sings on "I Ain't," a proto-Dino Jr. song with its bittersweet guitar bite. "Trying to get back, trying to get free/ I try more for you, are you there for me?" he pleads on "To Be Waiting," while angelic backing vocals keen against a scorching Jazzmaster solo. Barlow's own tracks here, especially the nice and Kinks-ish "Garden," have a more tightly contained gentility next to Mascis' sprawling id. Meanwhile, "Hide Another Round" ignites like a Fourth of July sparkler (and could've been a 120 Minutes favorite back in the day), "N Say" echoes Hüsker Dü, and "And Me" has the same DNA as the Dino Jr. classic "Whatever's Cool With Me." The extremely appealing "I Ran Away," meanwhile, bounces and bobs like Generation X's "Running With the Boss Sound," but with Kurt Vile playing 12-string lead at the top. (As much as it sounds like Gen X, Mascis has said he was trying to capture a little of Thin Lizzy's "dueling twin lead sound.") And after all these years, they're not afraid to get experimental. "Take It Back" is positively jaunty, with a piano-plunk melody that bounds into a funny little strut, bent blues riff and, for the final verse, a Steely Dan turn. Frontiers Music Srl released of the self-titled debut album from Brazil's Icon Of Sin, a new project centered around the stunning vocal talents of the popular Brazilian YouTube sensation Raphael Mendes. The band's sound is a loving acknowledgement of their love of '80s heavy metal coupled with a modern approach.

This third album from the Nottingham trio opens like the beginning of a movie, with an airy Intro accompanied by waves of violins... Then they get straight down to business on the second track, Californian Soil, which gives the album its title. Hannah Reid's voice has never been so gripping and masterful, both icy and red hot at the same time. The violins are present throughout. The only element that makes it possible to date the track to the present day is the electronic rhythm: a bit of downtempo nostalgia that is reminiscent of nineties trip hop. A video was made for the track with a rather dark aesthetic, a poetic blur and beach scenes reminiscent of David Hamilton's seventies photographs. The experience continues with Missing on which Hannnah Reid's ever-present virtuoso voice is amplified by echoes acting like a gospel choir. Speaking about the album, the singer explained that it mainly deals with themes such as feminism and celebrity - major trends of our time. She writes, "This record is about gaining possession of my own life. You imagine success will be amazing. Then you see it from the inside and ask, 'Why am I not controlling this thing? Why am I not allowed to be in control of it? And does that connect, in any way, to being a woman? If so, how can I do that differently?'" Speaking about success, she refers to the group's previous record, Truth Is a Beautiful Thing, released in 2017. By way of answers, the twelve tracks that make up Californian Soil indeed see Hannah take possession of the band and its reflections and attachment to the deepest of feelings, as shown by the bewitching and powerful Lord It's a Feeling and the more poppy How Does It Feel. London Grammar's indie pop is crossed by electronic elements, which gives it a unique feel, as on Baby It's You. The cinematographic atmosphere can be felt on I Need The Night, before sinking into the darkness and mystery of the last track, America, a melancholic ballad where Hannah talks about this (American) "dream that meant nothing to me...". Four years after their debut, English trio London Grammar returned with their sophomore set, Truth Is a Beautiful Thing, featuring production by Jon Hopkins (Imogen Heap, Coldplay), Paul Epworth (Florence + the Machine, Adele), and Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia). Once again, vocalist Hannah Reid takes center stage with her powerful, angelic instrument, which can stir the soul at the smokiest depths before jolting everything to the heavens in a fashion much like Florence Welch or Annie Lennox. Dan Rothman and Dominic Major provide lush accompaniment to Reid's voice, creating a gorgeous cinematic landscape that ranges from dreamlike wisps to fully enveloping grandeur. The first half of the album takes time to pick up, as Reid slowly eases listeners into "Wild Eyed," an expansive moment that recalls 2013's "Hey Now." The thumping heartbeat of "Oh Woman, Oh Man" gives the band equal time to shine. Other highlights include the throbbing "Non Believer," the uplifting Florence-esque "Bones of Ribbon," and the sweeping "Leave the War with Me." These tracks provide a much-needed jolt of energy to balance the album's other quieter moments, which tend to lull the listener into a dreamlike haze. While it's an overall relaxing experience, Truth Is a Beautiful Thing is never boring; it's a comforting and often heartbreaking listen that really gets under the skin, especially with Reid's emotive delivery.

Hard times call for big riffs. Following closely on the heels of the band's last album from 2020, Kingdom Of Oblivion swings further back toward the heavier Motorpsychodelia of Heavy Metal Fruit while still pushing forward in characteristic style.

One would think that after the "Gullvag Trilogy" - two double and a single album in a mere three years - this ultra productive trio might be in need of a break of sorts. but on the other hand, riding a golden wave like never before in their 30+ year existence, why stop now? Especially when constantly upping their own quality standards.The bulk of the album was recorded in France back before the pandemic, but was added to, expanded, tweaked and eventually finished last year.

The initial idea was to collect big riffs on one album and do a pure hard rock record, but the objective changed along the way as they rediscovered their folkish bent and how this lighter touch gave it all a nice contrast. That said, the main musical thrust is pretty full-on, even by Motorpsycho standards.
