Invece, giunto nell'isola piena ancora dei segni di un bagno di sangue, l'ufficiale-detective è posto di fronte a un compito ben diverso. Una famiglia di civili è stata massacrata nella sua villa, a quanto pare da una pattuglia di paracadutisti tedeschi. I servizi vogliono vederci chiaro, non solo per scagionare i soldati accusati di crimini di guerra e impedire un incidente diplomatico, ma anche per prevenire l'intervento della Croce Rossa e tenere lontane le SS di Himmler, interessate alla strage. Infatti, la vittima principale è un residente svizzero, esperto di antichità e storia della razza ariana e membro dell'Ahnenerbe, la società fondata da Himmler per studiare il passato mitico della razza ariana e sovrintendere a tutte le ricerche ancestrali e archeologiche. L'imbarazzo è grande, ed enorme il mistero. Per scioglierlo, Bora dovrà farsi carico di un'indagine che lo porterà a muoversi lungo piste divergenti: spionaggio, vendetta intestina tra caporioni del regime, arcani del nazismo magico, oppure un caso passionale celato in una strage bellica. Labirinto, odissea, ombre del passato, maschere: nei vari teatri della guerra più feroce di tutti i tempi continua la saga dell'inquieto Martin Bora. In questo rampollo di un'antica schiatta sassone di guerrieri e artisti, Ben Pastor ha forgiato un personaggio riflessivo ed emblematico. Nel suo intimo si combatte la battaglia segreta tra l'obbligo d'onore al giuramento e la repulsione naturale verso gli uomini, gli atti e le idee del nazismo.
