Descrizione La trama rimane pressoché invariata rispetto agli episodi precedenti e l’unica differenza risiede nella fusione fra le tre storie in un solo filone narrativo, in particolare nelle giunture che collegano i vari atti i cui passaggi risultano ora più logici. Nel suo lungo viaggio insieme al fido spirito Katarina, il figlio del famoso cacciatore Van Helsing dovrà eradicare ogni forma di male soprannaturale da Borgovia e dintorni, scoprendo allo stesso tempo che a causarlo è principalmente il degrado della mente umana, votata in questo mondo oscuro a rituali ed esperimenti folli. Ciò che viene narrato cattura perfettamente l’atmosfera del romanzo di Stroker arricchendola con tantissimi elementi fantasy e steampunk capaci, insieme all’eccellente doppiaggio, di affascinare qualsiasi tipo di utente. La durata complessiva del pacchetto si aggira, per quanto riguarda il single player, sulle trenta ore di gioco ma può chiaramente estendersi a seconda del vostro grado di completismo proiettato senz’altro pure alla rigiocabilità estesa grazie alle sei classi disponibili fin da subito. Concentrati sull’integrazione delle nuove categorie di cacciatore nel corrispettivo delle parti I e II, gli sviluppatori hanno migliorato il sistema di loot focalizzando la loro attenzione sull’esclusività dei bottini ottenuti da boss e miniboss in funzione dell’assenza di respawn degli stessi, quindi di facoltà di grinding. Tale mancanza si deve soprattutto al bilanciamento automatico della forza dei nemici in base al livello del giocatore, altro tassello chiave di un’esperienza che presenta uno spiccato carattere hardcore accentuato, invero, dall’elevato -a volte eccessivo- numero di mob all’interno delle mappe, raggruppati quasi sempre in folte schiere degne di un musou pronte ad attentare alla vostra resistenza e causando, talvolta, morti alquanto ingiuste. Ad aiutarci interviene la rinnovata struttura di abilità e aure, adesso rimpolpate sia in numero che in efficacia, meno aperte all’interpretazione ma di certo votate come non mai alla specializzazione in rami distinti in un certo senso obbligati dal gioco; ogni personaggio ha sì tante spec a portata di mano, tuttavia il playstyle associato resta comunque ancorato, in prevalenza, ad un solo tipo di arma e skill per classe. Ciò non inficia il divertimento scaturito dal combat system che si mantiene sui binari di Van Helsing II per frenesia e varietà di impiego dovuti in parte alle combo attivabili tramite l’utilizzo della Rabbia, che contribuiscono a restituire un feedback degno di Diablo 3 e Path of Exile. Ottimi inoltre i design dei nemici, ognuno dotato di personalità e attacchi ben diversificati, e dei boss, spesso spettacolari visivamente e meccanicamente giacché progettati per essere sconfitti in modi alternativi al classico approccio frontale; soddisfacente anche la quantità e la profondità delle missioni secondarie, peculiari al punto giusto da non scadere nel ripetitivo.
