Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) è un ladro tra i più qualificati nella pericolosa arte dell'estrazione: la sua specialità consiste, appunto, nell'appropriarsi dei segreti più preziosi di un individuo, sepolti nel più profondo del suo subcosciente nel momento in cui è più vulnerabile, ovvero quando dorme e sogna. Grazie al suo innegabile talento, perfezionato negli anni e che consiste nell'incastonare un sogno dentro un altro, in modo da confondere ulteriormente la sua vittima, Cobb è molto richiesto nell'ambiente losco dello spionaggio industriale. Allo stesso tempo, Cobb è un fuggitivo che ha perso tutto quello che aveva di più caro e che si trova ora braccato in tutto il mondo. Un'ultima missione potrebbe permettergli di ritrovare la sua vita di un tempo, a condizione che possa compiere l'impossibile, ovvero "l'innesto" (The inception): invece di estrarre un sogno, Cobb e la sua squadra devono fare l'inverso, impiantare un'idea nella mente della loro vittima. Se ci riescono avranno compiuto il crimine perfetto. Stiamo parlando di un molto particolare tipo di furto, però: la pericolosa e difficile arte di estrarre segreti rilevanti dall'inconscio durante la fase onirica, il momento in cui la mente abbassa tutte le sue difese e diventa vulnerabile. Questa abilità ne ha fatto un personaggio di rilievo nel mondo dello spionaggio industriale, ma il prezzo che ha dovuto pagare per la sua notorietà è di essere stato condannato a un'eterna fuga. Egli dunque è privato della possibilità di amare e di essere amato, finché non gli viene offerta una possibilità di redenzione e di uscita dal circolo vizioso. Questa volta però, Cobb e il suo team di specialisti, dovranno operare un totale ribaltamento di fronte e invece di sottrarre informazioni dovranno riuscire a crearne: invece di rubare semplicemente un'idea dovranno farla nascere, generarla da zero. His excellent work on director Christopher Nolan's 2008 international blockbuster The Dark Knight, was disqualified for Oscar consideration due to too many cooks (composers) in the kitchen, a handicap that doesn't apply to Nolan's 2010 follow-up, Inception. Zimmer's signature move, a four- to eight-chord round that builds from a subtle breeze to an F5 tornado, serves as the foundation for Inception's dizzying score, and the addition of Smiths/Cribs guitarist Johnny Marr, who appears on eight of the twelve cuts, dutifully expands the layers of Zimmer's melodies, much like the dream building that occurs onscreen. There are moments that bring to mind Vangelis' moody, jazz-kissed work on Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, but Inception's backbone is pure Zimmer.
