In questo contesto si inseriscono le storie del giovane musicista di colore Larry Reed (Algee Smith) e della guardia giurata Melvin Dismukes (John Boyega). Tra il frastuono e la violenza degli scontri tra i cittadini e la polizia, le vite di Larry e Melvin si legheranno inevitabilmente. Il suo è un film basato sul potere dell'adrenalina (che deriva dallo stile, energico come d'abitudine e ancora più sporco e documentaristico) e su quello dell'indignazione suscitata da un racconto per molti versi analogo a quello di Diaz di Vicari. E però, nel suo voler studiare la psicologia della violenza e delle sue vittime, più che la violenza in sé, quello della regista americana è un film spettacolare ma paradossalmente freddo, che non aggiuge molto al dibattito in atto sulle questioni che tratta.
