A causa degli atteggiamenti pestiferi del figlio, i genitori faticano a trovare dei babysitter adatti. Il piccolo inoltre è l’incubo vivente dell’anziano e tranquillo vicino di casa George Wilson (Walter Matthau), che non viene mai lasciato il pace da Dennis. Un giorno i coniugi Mitchell, costretti a partire per lavoro, chiedono a George e alla moglie Martha (Joan Plowright) di badare al figlioletto: la signora Wilson è ben felice di ospitare il bambino, mentre l’anziano vicino è terrificato e teme il peggio, soprattutto in vista di un importante evento di un club botanico di cui George fa parte e che si terrà proprio nel suo giardino. Mentre si sta tenendo l’evento, Dennis si accorge che qualcuno sta derubando la casa dei Wilson: si tratta del cattivo ladro Switchblade Sam (Christopher Lloyd). Il piccolo cerca di avvisare George, il quale stanco dei guai combinati da Dennis, lo caccia via in malo modo. Il bambino allora scappa in sella alla sua bicicletta, ma arrivato nel bosco incontra il furfante, che decide di rapirlo per chiedere il riscatto...
