Maggie esprime prima una forza e un coinvolgimento così intensi nel tentare di salvare il paziente e, poi, una disperazione così grande per averlo perso, che Steth non può fare a meno di rimanerle accanto. L’angelo decide di fare in modo di rendersi visibile alla dottoressa che, sebbene mantenga un forte scetticismo dovuto alla sua formazione scientifica, si apre a un’amicizia che velocemente si trasforma in amore. Uno dei pazienti in cura da Maggie è Nathaniel Messinger (Dennis Franz) che, inaspettatamente, riesce a percepire la presenza di Steth. Nathaniel, infatti, è un angelo caduto che ha scelto di diventare mortale per amore della donna che ha poi sposato. Questo incontro insinua in Steth l’idea di seguire lo stesso percorso: abbandonare la propria condizione di angelo per diventare umano e poter finalmente amare Meggie con tutti i sensi, essere vicino alla donna anche fisicamente e poter finalmente provare tutte le sensazioni umane fino ad allora incomprensibili. Steth continua ad andare alle riunioni serali sulla spiaggia in cui gli angeli si confrontano sulle azioni che hanno portato a termine durante la giornata, ma dentro di sé sente di aver preso la decisione definitiva. Porta quindi a compimento il suo passaggio da angelo a uomo compiendo un gesto di caduta fisica: si butta dalle impalcature di un palazzo in costruzione. Ma il destino umano gli riserverà delle sorprese.
