Whatever bonus material attached to CD reissues over the years has been stripped away -- nothing from the 2001 deluxe edition of Billion Dollar Babies, then -- and there are no new remasters of the albums, but this set isn't bare bones. The mini-LP replicas contain a few inserts carried over from the vinyl and, more importantly, those early Straight Records are present, which is good because they were out of print for a while. Missing from this set are his two duet albums with Milt Jackson and the live Ray Charles at Newport, great records whose absence isn't necessarily noted because the seven LPs here are all excellent (that said, it does feel odd that the 1954 hit "It Should've Been Me" slipped through the cracks due to the insistence that this features only the long-players). But this didn't prevent some groups from offering up an alternative. Buffalo Springfield is one of those groups, led by Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay and completed by bassist Bruce Palmer and drummer Dewey Martin. From their eponymous first album, Buffalo Springfield, which appeared at the end of 1966, their attention was turned towards folk-rock, psychedelic, country (like with Go And Say Goodbye) and even pop (with Sit Down I Think I Love You). It's a cocktail that often touches the sublime (like the protest hit song For What It's Worth by Stills) and remains the cornerstone of 60's folk rock, just like the ballad Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing by Neil Young. This atypical group remains especially fascinating for the assortment of its strong personalities. Though it was exactly for that reason that the group came to an end. As early as their second album release in November 1967 (Buffalo Springfield Again) the cracks began to show - notably between Stills and Young who were fighting over artistic direction. Each leader signed his own themes, like Broken Arrow, Mr Soul and Expecting To Fly for the Canadian and Bluebird for the American... With the aptly named Last Time Around, Buffalo Springfield took its final bow, with Neil Young even jumping ship before the end of the recording of this third opus that was released during the summer of 1968. Even the album cover is in fact a montage simulating a group shot... From there after, the various members found further success independently: Neil Young took off solo, Richie Furay went on to form the band Poco and Stills joined David Crosby and Graham Nash for the trio Crosby, Stills & Nash... This 5CD box set brings together the stereo mixes of the three albums and the mono mixes of Buffalo Springfield and Buffalo Springfield Again, all remastered from the original analogue tapes under the direction of Neil Young. This seven album set is the definitive Creedence collection, offering superbly HighRes-remastered versions of all of their studio albums. The ultimate blue-collar rock band, John Fogerty and CCR found success by wholly giving in to their fascination with the American South (despite hailing from Northern California) and exploring the turf that connected R&B and country--the same turf that their heroes at Sun studios tilled at rock's birth. As the songs on the first disc prove, they hadn't always taken this approach though perhaps they should have: The first four songs from 1961 (by Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets), original compositions in the classic '50s rock & roll style they loved, hold up better than subsequent Golliwogs tracks that attempt to replicate the British Invasion sound in vogue at the time. As its title suggests, The Reprise Albums (1968-1971) brings together the first four of these: Song to a Seagull (March 1968), Clouds (May 1969), Ladies of the Canyon (April 1970) and Blue (June 1971). The first four and nothing else! That means that we dispense with the usual alternative takes and other unreleased demos that we would usually find on this kind of reissue: the focus here is on the essentials. And what is essential here is a young woman gradually extracting herself from a folk idiom (the Canadian always hated being labelled a folk-singer) and creating her own language. This is an identity that takes shape from Songs to a Seagull onwards. The young Mitchell even entrusted the former Byrd, David Crosby, with the production of this first effort, which she divided into two sides: I Came to the City which looks towards the city, and Out of the City and Down by the Seaside, which turns towards nature. Joni Mitchell develops these themes with her open tuning, her high, clear, mesmerising voice, and a certain melodic richness. A big drawback to Songs to a Seagull is its original mix, which sounds almost shameful. This error was rectified for the 2021 re-release by sound engineer Matt Lee. "The original mix was atrocious. It sounded like it was recorded under a jello bowl, so I fixed it!" With Clouds, Joni Mitchell ploughs a similar furrow, but with greater harmonic and instrumental richness. The themes she addresses on this second album remain transparent enough, from the personal and introspective (I Don't Know Where I Stand) to the tormented and fearful (The Fiddle and the Drum), but the music has become denser. This feeling will intensify with Ladies of the Canyon, a hit which boosted her reputation. This third album saw the singer transform her folk sound with richer lyrics and increasingly subtle arrangements. Joni Mitchell was achieving unprecedented sophistication and becoming a unique star in the orbit of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, to whom she was still very much attached. Critics and audiences quickly fell in love with all of these quirks. But in spite of her fame she still yearned for freedom, and to get away from the limelight. So after Ladies of the Canyon was recorded, naturally Joni Mitchell wanted to set out travelling. One year later, Blue came out. Her fourth album on Reprise, it proved a cornerstone of her introspective, stripped-down folk sound. For all its lack of artifice and repetitive ingredients, this was a work of peerless grace and depth. A masterpiece conceived as a private journal set to music, it marked a real turning point in the career of the 28-year-old musician. This remaster offers up a definitive version.
