Anche il soldato Kyle Reese viene mandato indietro nel tempo, ma per proteggere Sarah. Il Terminator arriva a Los Angeles nel 1984 e prima di essere eliminato incontra un T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) dall'aspetto anziano. Intanto fa il suo arrivo anche Kyle, che viene inseguito da un T-1000 e viene salvato proprio da Sarah Connor. La ragazza fa conoscere a Kyle il T-800 mandato nel 1973 per difenderla da un altro cyborg. Il robot da allora vive al suo fianco, addestrandola e proteggendola come un padre. Sarah e Kyle viaggiano avanti nel tempo per cercare di evitare catastrofi nucleari e la distruzione del genere umano che le macchine stanno organizzando. Una volta arrivati nel 2017 i due s'incontrano nuovamente con il T-800, chiamato anche "Il Guardiano".
