La novità del film consiste nello sdoppiamento di Superman: per poterlo eliminare, il suo nemico gli offre uno strano dono come riconoscimento dei molti servigi resi alla causa del bene. Un cristallo di Kriptonite, materiale sintetico imitante quello del pianeta Kripton dal quale l'eroe era arrivato anni prima su questa terra, che scatena in Superman la sua parte cattiva: arriva tardi in soccorso dei pericolanti, fa dispetti alle ragazze, raddrizza la torre di Pisa compromettendo il turismo, si dà all'alcool e molto altro. Dopo una lotta con il suo doppio riuscirà a liberarsi dal male ed a far riaffiorare in se stesso il bene. A questo punto il nostro super-eroe potrà ingaggiare la battaglia finale contro il marchingegno computerizzato e trionfare contro il male. Da quel momento tra russi e americani divampa la lotta per la supremazia nel cielo. I russi, nel 1957 lanciano il primo Sputnik. Il 9 aprile 1959 il direttore del programma spaziale Mercury presenta il gruppo dei futuri astronauti tra i quali si trovano John Glenn (Ed Harris) e Alan Shepard (Scott Glenn). Una ricostruzione della corsa verso il cielo condotta da Philip Kaufman a metà tra il documentario e il dramma. La cosa migliore è la scelta degli attori: tante "facce da duro", con menzione speciale per Ed Harris, Scott Glenn e Lance Henriksen. -

Max Renn è il presidente di un canale televisivo dalla dubbia programmazione. L'uomo è disperatamente alla ricerca di nuove idee che attraggano un numero maggiore di spettatori e vede in 'Videodrome' una possibile fonte di successo. Lo spettacolo in questione è incentrato sulla tortura gratuita degli ospiti e quando la fidanzata del giovane decide di parteciparvi, il giovane scopre che ciò che credeva essere finzione è molto più vicino alla realtà di quanto pensasse. In una delle sue ultime udienze si trova di fronte Mark McCormick, ex-pilota e ladro d'auto, accusato ingiustamente del furto di un'auto da corsa, progettata dal pilota ed amico Johnny "Flip" Johnson, ucciso in precedenza dal suo socio in affari; Hardcastle si convince della sua innocenza e lo prende in custodia stringendo con lui un patto: se Mark avesse fatto da braccio destro a Hardcastle in una personale lotta ai criminali dei quali teneva ancora i dati in archivio, lo avrebbe aiutato ad arrestare l'assassino del suo amico. McCormick eredita infine l'automobile "Coyote X", una kitcar basata sulla McLaren M6BGT, con motore Porsche 914 e chassis della VW Beetle, progettata proprio da Johnson e McCormick; l'intera serie è infatti principalmente basata sull'inseguimento automobilistico.
