The album yielded the mega-hit "Runaway Train", which by winning a Grammy, put the band in a whole new league. "Soul Asylum's breakthrough, million-selling Grave Dancers Union yielded the mega-hit "Runaway Train" and put the band in a whole new league; longtime fans were predictably disappointed with the slick results. This is a solid alternative rock record with singer/songwriter/vocalist Dave Pirner upfront, a role he was built for but always seemed to resist until this clear do-or-die moment for the band. Soul Asylum did; however, they never matched the success or consistency of this album. Tracks like "Home Sick" and "New World" bear the roots of the country-rock revival later forged by Son Volt and Wilco, while the angst-ridden "Somebody to Shove" is pure joy Soul Asylum-style." Anyone who's seen the documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart witnessed the project's two creative engines, Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett, driving themselves mad in the process. Arguably, Wilco's best work were products of the Tweedy-Bennett partnership. Bennett, who came off as unduly obsessive and off kilter in the film, was fired from the band after the album's completion (and sadly died in 2009 from an accidental overdose at age 45); original drummer Ken Coomer was also let go during the recording process. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot also stands as yet another instance where Jim O'Rourke, who eventually mixed the album, continued to build his considerable reputation as a musical influencer. The turmoil continued after the album was finished when Warner Music Group-owned Reprise Records, which had undergone staff changes after a merger with AOL, didn't hear the album's commercial potential, and refused to release it. This led to a lengthy battle during which the band streamed the album for free on its website, gained control of the master tapes, and after a bidding war signed with another WMG label, Nonesuch Records, where the band remains to this day. (As a final complication, the album's cover features a photo of Chicago's Marina City- two corn cobbed-shaped high-rise buildings-and had an original release date of September 11, 2001.) Artistically, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot marks the moment where Wilco left its Uncle Tupelo alt-country past behind and stepped deep into bold sonic exploration. Although Tweedy has always made it clear that he considers it a "pop album," he's also said, "I was learning about contrasts. A lot of the songs on Yankee aren't particularly abstract. But they benefit from being in a disorienting landscape of language . I needed to find some experimental music with a bigger heart. That's what I was looking for my whole life." In a telling sign that it's something special, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot still sounds fresh, an artistic evergreen. While the lyrics veered off into nonsensical land, the music, in songs like the "I'm the Man Who Loves You," "War on War" and ever sublime, "Jesus, Etc." are tuneful in timeless ways, untethered to any genre or current of popular music. It's ageless art rock that stands to this day as the band's most lasting work. The original mix has been refreshed by famed engineer Bob Ludwig without any major changes. The tracks that appear under the heading of Unified Theory of Everything are taken from the mountain of tape (much of it ADATs) that the band recorded for the album. At their most revealing, Wilco show the expansive vision of experimentation they brought to the project and the struggle to translate that in the studio. While "Jesus, Etc." is nearly the same as the released take, this version of "Kamera" is slower and has a big buzzy guitar at its center. The "Stravinsky mix" of "Ashes of American Flags" opens with flutes. None is more telling however than "Remember to Remember," which later became "Hummingbird" on 2004's A Ghost is Born. It's much heavier than the original version, the mix based around an insistent drumbeat, wavering keyboards, and an electric guitar part. The live show from 2002 at The Pageant in St. Louis, which benefits from generally good sound, shows the band bouncing back, playing stripped down versions of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot tunes and getting a handle on playing the material without the multi-talented Bennett. There was a time back before the band became the extraordinary collection of virtuoso musicians it is today, when Tweedy was still hungry, desperate even, for success. While the band had already transitioned gracefully from their mod-ish British Invasion origins (and the heavy production thumb of Shel Talmy) into something more adventurous and artful with 1968's The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, that masterpiece's two iconic follow-ups (Arthur and Lola) found Ray Davies' weird twin penchants for acidic lyricism and music hall song structures becoming more and more dominant in the group's sound. By the time the 1971 soundtrack to Percy rolled around, U.S. audiences had all but forgotten about the band, who soon found themselves facing the same fate in their native England. And although Davies would delve further and further into high-concept theatricality (and deeper commercial irrelevance) with a series of four albums in the mid-70s, there was a brief interregnum in 1971 and 1972 when it looked as if the Kinks had seized upon a creatively successful way to synthesize all of their influences. While 1971's Muswell Hillbillies is more often notched into various "Best Of..." lists, there's a strong case to be made that its follow-up, Everybody's In Show-Biz, does a much better job at showing off the band's strengths at the time. To be sure, like nearly every Kinks album, this one has a couple of bafflingly dumb songs; "Maximum Consumption" is another list-of-foods song that is the mirror image of the equally stupid "Skin and Bone" (originally on Muswell, but also here in a live version), and "Motorway" is a song about . driving (with its own short list of foods one may eat while driving). While these dumb-but-lovely tunes are par for the course for a Kinks album, the more typical Kinks tunes here-"Supersonic Rocket Ship," "Hot Potatoes" (someone please feed Ray Davies!)-are deceptively breezy, as their easy-rocking structures are played as wryly as their lyrics. A cut like "You Don't Know My Name" shouldn't be as good as it is, and it definitely shouldn't be kicked into an even higher gear by an unexpectedly perfect flute solo in the bridge. Given the relatively higher level that most of the material here is working at, it shouldn't be surprising that Show-Biz's high points are some of the best songs the Kinks ever put to vinyl. And while the emotionally note-perfect sentimentality of "Celluloid Heroes" justifiably gets the lion's share of attention, the sly and subtle "Sitting In My Hotel" is nearly as effective. Two reissues mark the album's 50th anniversary. The Deluxe 2022 Remaster version is relatively spare when it comes to extras; of course the live set from the Muswell Hillbillies tour that was included in the original vinyl version appears intact, but beyond that, the bonus material is limited to just a couple of new mixes of "Celluloid Heroes." The Legacy Edition features previously unreleased studio outtakes and more live cuts from their two-night stand at Carnegie Hall in March 1972. Even before the release of their captivating debut, The Gereg, the genre-smashing Mongolians had whipped the internet into a frenzy, notching up tens of millions of streams across YouTube and social media. It was anything but a gimmick. Blending rock and metal elements with traditional Mongolian instruments and the art of throat singing, they conjured an enthralling sound rooted in fist-raising chants and rampaging tempos that felt like a marauding horde thundering across the steppe. That they struck such a resonant chord throughout the global metal community, while singing exclusively in their native tongue, spoke to the intrinsic power of the music. Whereas their debut felt like a metal album played on folk instruments, Rumble Of Thunder is a decidedly more modern affair, opening with the one-two punch of This Is Mongol and Yut Hovende. Stridently forceful and coursing with swagger and energy, both tracks erupt with grinding waves of riffage and a full drum kit along with the traditional string and wind instruments. Rumble. renews its predecessor's affinity for flint-eyed rockers such as Shihi Hutu, Sell The World and Black Thunder, but it also delivers more depth and variety than The Gereg. At times they step entirely away from metal in favour of zippy, pop- oriented numbers like Triangle, Teach Me and Bii Biyelgee - a booming folk pop gem with a hip-swivelling spontaneity that will reduce crowds to a joyful, sweaty mess. There's even a stab at balladry in the form of Mother Nature - perhaps the only moment when understanding the lyrics might be critical to appreciating the track. Founding members Jones, Page and Plant - along with Jason Bonham, the son of John Bonham - took the stage at London's O2 Arena in 2007 to headline a tribute concert for Ahmet Ertegun, a dear friend and Atlantic Records' founder. The band was honored for its lifetime contribution to American culture at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012. Such understatement is typical of Mark Knopfler, particularly in the third act of his career. When he left Dire Straits behind, he also left behind any semblance of playing for the cheap seats in an arena, but Tracker feels quieter than his new millennial norm. Some of this is due to the undercurrent of reflection tugging at the record's momentum. Knopfler isn't pining for the past but he is looking back, sometimes wistfully, sometimes with a resigned smile, and he appropriately draws upon sounds that he's long loved. Usually, this means some variation of pub rock -- the languid ballad "River Towns," the lazy shuffle "Skydiver," the two-chord groove of "Broken Bones" -- but this is merely the foundation from which Knopfler threads in a fair amount of olde British folk and other roots digressions. It presents the perfect opportunity to discover - or rediscover - the "Lambert phenomenon" live. At just 29 years old, he dared to walk in the footsteps of one of the greatest singers and showmen we've ever seen: Freddie Mercury. It can't have been easy trying to choose the tracks for this album but the skilful mix of unavoidable hits and rarer tracks means that it avoids falling into the trap of simply being a best of live album. Better yet, Roger Taylor, Brian May and Adam Lambert go so far as to pay tribute to Mercury by including two tracks from his solo repertoire (the moving song Love Kills - The Ballad and I Was Born to Love You). Probably stemming from the fact that Mercury's voice is completely individual, Lambert stays faithful to the Queen sound but never tries to copy him. It soon becomes clear judging from the songs here (Somebody To Love is a good example) that few people could have risen to the challenge - and done it so well. Among the record's many highlights, the brilliant version of cult favourite Under Pressure stands out, with the original Mercury/Bowie duo being replaced by Lambert and Taylor. There's also a heavy version of Now I'm Here - a track that proves that 70-year-olds still know how to bring out the big guns (check out the severely underestimated drummer Roger Taylor!). It's a given that Queen and Lambert won't write any new material. They're focusing on bringing their huge musical heritage to the stage, so we should appreciate these songs without expecting anything else.
