Gaucho essentially replicates the smooth jazz-pop of Aja, but with none of that record's dark, seductive romance or elegant aura. Instead, it's meticulous and exacting; each performance has been rehearsed so many times that it no longer has any emotional resonance. Furthermore, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's songs are generally labored, only occasionally reaching their past heights, like on the suave "Babylon Sisters," "Time Out of Mind," and "Hey Nineteen." On Oct. 1, the drummer of Queen released Outsider, an album that he describes as "a bit more grown-up than my last couple of albums." The artist created the album throughout the isolation of the pandemic, as Queen + Adam Lambert's tour was postponed to 2022. This isn't Taylor's first solo album; in 1981, he released Fun In Space, and three more until his 2013 album, Fun on Earth. Although this new album is coming out 40 years after his first individual album, it is still individually written, produced and performed. Prior to the pandemic, while the band gained traction on the silver screen, Taylor was playing shows, such as one with the Foo Fighters at a pop-up show in LA. Though the drummer doubtlessly pays tribute to his time with Queen, he makes more political statements than the band did. "In Queen we always tried to be apolitical," Taylor said in a press release. "But when you have the freedom to express yourself as a single person, you can say what the hell you like, which I've always tried to do. So many gangsters are running countries these days." And with such freedom, you can also explore different musical styles and thematic concepts, from the bluesy "I Know I Know I Know" to the uplifting title track. The result is a potent, driving slab of hard rock that will please Nazareth fans and devotees of 1970s hard rock alike. The album sets its frenzied tone right off the bat with its title track, a blistering rocker that features Dan McCafferty spitting out a sharp-edged vocal about life's cruelty over a series of fast and relentless guitar riffs. The remainder of the album prominently features a similarly brutal string of rockers: standouts include "Revenge Is Sweet," a paean to getting even that combines chugging guitar riffs with a stomping beat, and "Gimme What's Mine," a fierce declaration of dominance that layers Southern rock-styled riffs over a churning bassline. Despite this preponderance of hard rocking tunes, Expect No Mercy isn't just a guitar-fest. It also takes time to explore country-rock (there is an excellent, rocked-up cover of the country standard "Busted" as well as a honky tonk-style original called "Place in Your Heart") and even a little bit of funk (a hard-grooving slice of funk-rock fusion called "New York Broken Toy"). The album never takes the daring stylistic chance within the hard rock formula that distinguished Razamanaz or Hair of the Dog, but this is minor quibble in light of the album's high levels of consistency and quality. In short, Expect No Mercy is a treat for Nazareth fans and a solid listen for any hard rock fan who wants a good indication of the group's style. © Donald A. The album marked several changes for the band, with it being the first with new drummer Gavin Harrison and the first to move into a more heavy metal and progressive metal direction, contrary to past albums' psychedelic and pop rock sounds. While not a formal concept album, many of the songs still have common themes related to serial killers, youthful innocence gone wrong, and criticisms of the modern world. The album's title is also tied into this, with the phrase being Latin for "in absence" or "in one's absence", often in reference to a person's rights when mentally unable to be represented in court in legal situations. Wilson said of the title: "It comes from. It's related to some of the lyrics. It's about people on the fringes, on the edges of humanity and society. I have an interest in serial killers, child molesters, and wife beaters. Not in what they did, but in the psychology of why. What caused them to become unhinged and twisted? Why are they unable to empathise? It's sort of a metaphor - there's something missing, a black hole, a cancer in their soul.
