Descrizione L'Accademia Militare di Thors rappresenta il cuore pulsante del sistema educativo dell'impero di Erebonia, una delle superpotenze che compongono l'affresco politico e militare del continente di Zemuria, già teatro delle vicende di altri giochi di ruolo made in Falcom, e, come tale, esservi ammessi rappresenta un onore per gli studenti, tenuti a sostenere dei minuziosi test per concorrere ad un posto. In un mondo che ricalca quello dell'Europa centrale dei primi anni del ventesimo secolo, la distinzione tra nobiltà e gente comune è alla base del sistema sociale, e ciò non può che riflettersi sulla divisione degli alunni all'interno dell'accademia, con corsi e dormitori separati a seconda del rango di provenienza...con una eccezione. Il nutrito cast di protagonisti, infatti, viene selezionato per comporre la cosiddetta Classe VII, la prima, nella gloriosa storia di Thors, a mescolare individui di estrazione sociale assai differente, raggruppandoli piuttosto per le loro innate capacità nell'arte del combattimento: oltre a dotarli di equipaggiamento molto avanzato (sebbene ancora in fase sperimentale), i vertici dell'Accademia ne favoriscono la socializzazione, dedicando loro lezioni speciali e un edificio dedicato, cosicché l'esperimento abbia valenza sociale oltre che militare. Il giocatore sarà chiamato a vestire i panni di Rean Schwarzer, un mister nessuno che, senza preavviso, viene insignito dei gradi di leader del gruppo, con la responsabilità di condurlo in battaglia ma anche di sedare i dissapori interni tra gente comune e nobili, che inevitabilmente affioreranno già dal prologo. Se, sulle prime, l'impianto narrativo sembra prendere in prestito non pochi elementi da titoli quali i due Valkyria Chronicles e Final Fantasy Type 0, dall'atmosfera dell'accademia alla formazione di un gruppo elite di giovani superdotati, l'intreccio prende presto tutta un'altra direzione, caricandosi sulle spalle l'onere di presentare al giocatore un lore ricchissimo, che fungerà da base per l'intera trilogia, che, ovviamente, speriamo di vedere tradotta per l'occidente. Il gameplay di Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel è assai stratificato, e, pur non contando su alcun elemento che si possa dire innovativo, rappresenta una summa del meglio visto in trent'anni di giochi di ruolo giapponesi, sovrapponendo una serie di dinamiche di gioco in maniera efficace. Rigorosamente a turni, il sistema di combattimento presenta numerose feature interessanti, dalla presenza di un sistema di Quarzi che ricorda molto il Materia System che contribuì al successo di un certo Final Fantasy VII, alla possibilità di sviluppare l'intesa con gli altri membri del party, beneficiando così di attacchi supplementari. Ognuno dei personaggi giocabili è dotato di un device tecnologico all'interno del quale si possono incastonare gemme di diverso colore, associate ai diversi elementi, che portano in dote abilità uniche, come magie offensive, di cura, di supporto e bonus passivi. A queste, si affiancano le Crafts, abilità innate che i personaggi guadagnano salendo di livello, con un duplice sistema di punti a cui attingere: le Arts, guadagnate via Quarzi, consumano punti magici, ricaricabili tramite l'utilizzo di oggetti o di apposite stazioni di ricarica, mentre i CP necessari per effettuare le Crafts si ricaricano infliggendo danni ai nemici sul campo di battaglia. A tutto questo si aggiungono le potentissime S-Break, tecniche finali che infliggono danni devastanti ma prosciugano la barra dei CP, una interessante gestione degli spazi, per cui determinati nemici potrebbero non essere raggiungibili ed altri, invece, potrebbero essere coinvolti in attacchi ad area, e, come anticipato, la possibilità di godere dell'apporto dei compagni con i quali si è maggiormente intensificato il legame spirituale.
