Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood), un reduce della guerra di Corea, dal carattere burbero e spavaldo, con una grande passione per la sua Ford Torino, modello classico del 1972, custodita in garage. Walt si trova a fare i conti con un mondo in continuo mutamento, costretto dai suoi vicini di casa che sono emigranti a confrontarsi con i suoi pregiudizi in lui ben radicati. Meccanico in pensione, Walt Kowalski riempie le sue giornate facendo dei piccoli lavori di riparazione nelle case, bevendo birra e recandosi una volta al mese dal barbiere. Nonostante l'ultimo desiderio espresso dalla moglie, ormai deceduta, fosse che il marito si confessasse, per Walt, che tiene il suo fucile M-1 sempre pronto e carico non c'è nulla da confessare.
