    Cloven Hoof - Heathen Cross (2024) 44.1-24
    Country:UK
    Genre: Heavy Metal, NWOBHM
    Format: FLAC (*tracks)
    Quality: Lossless [44,1kHz/24 bit]

Midlands outfit Cloven Hoof must rate as one of the most legendary bands of the entire New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement. The origins of the group go back to the year 1979, when they first formed under the name of Nightstalker. In 1981, however, the band switched to their new moniker: Cloven Hoof.

With songs like "Do What Thou Wilt", "Sabbat Stones" and "The Summoning" their brand new album »Heathen Cross« marks the return to High Roller Records. "We are back now where we belong," smirks Lee Payne. "»Heathen Cross« is Cloven Hoof's most dark and heavy album yet! It has the Satanic undertones of our debut album, but with the best vocalist the group has ever had. Personally speaking it is hands down my favourite Cloven Hoof album. We wanted to recapture the spirit and the supernatural majesty of the debut album. Talking to the fans we have given them what they wanted most, a return to the roots of the NWOBHM. They are going to love it!"

    Crowded House - Gravity Stairs (2024) 48-24
    Country: Australia
    Genre: Pop Rock
    Format: FLAC (*tracks)
    Quality: Lossless [48kHz/24 bit]
    Time: 40:38
    Full Size: 503.88 MB

Crowded House's eighth album feels like a nugget retrieved from a time capsule buried in the mid '60s-just as the British Invasion ushered in a shaggy new counterculture. The cover art even mimics the classic Klaus Voormann portraits of the Beatles' Revolver. There's a trippy garage-psych vibe to songs like "Blurry Grass" and "Black Water, White Circle," with the hypnotic latter boasting nervous percussion and choral harmonies. "I Can't Keep Up With You" is a hip-swiveling call to dance. Neil Finn & Co. also delve into the folky side of the era, with "Magic Piano"-twinkling keys, whispery backing vocals, laser light-show dreaminess-and the optimistically jangling, Simon and Garfunkel-esque "Teenage Summer" (featuring additional vocals by New Zealand singer Ladyhawke). Finn has said he named the album for a stone staircase he sees on vacation, calling it a "metaphor for getting a little older and becoming aware of your own mortality, your own physicality" as there is "more determination needed to get to the top, but there's still the same compulsion to climb." The compulsion is strong, and it runs in the family. His older brother Tim Finn, of the great New Zealand band Split Enz, co-wrote and lends vocals to "Some Greater Plan (For Clare)," a dreamy Everly Brothers-style ballad warmed with glistening bouzouki. Indeed, the album is a family affair, in both the true and musical sense, as the band now includes Neil's sons Elroy and Liam trading off on various instruments (their mother, Sharon, joins on backing vocals for a few tracks), as well as original bassist Nick Seymour. Also present is keyboardist/ producer Mitchell Froom, who has worked with Crowded House on and off since their excellent self-titled debut in 1986-the album that gave us and "Something So Strong" and "Don't Dream It's Over," one of the most perfect pop songs put to record of the decade. "The Howl" is a country rocker, "All That I Can Ever Own" feels Paisley Underground-esque, and "Oh Hi"-inspired by Neil's work with a nonprofit that builds schools in remote areas of Kenya and Tanzania-is bubblegum joyous. And "Night Song" is a jazzy twist, covered in a layer of fuzz that eventually lifts as the song turns soulful. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz

Big Head Todd and The Monsters have persisted as a rare force of nature in rock 'n' roll. The platinum-selling Colorado quartet-Todd Park Mohr [vocals, guitar, keys, sax, harmonica], Brian Nevin [drums, percussion], Rob Squires [bass, vocals], and Jeremy Lawton [guitar, keys, vocals, steel guitar]-have consistently churned out undeniable and often uplifting anthems fueled by a hybrid of no-nonsense hard rock, simmering soul, dyed-in-the-wool blues, and a twist of country. Akin to your favorite classic automobile, their influence and imprint only widen over time, selling out even bigger venues and enrapturing new eras of fans with every passing year. These cats have always paved their own lane. Todd, Brian, and Rob started playing music together while still in high school during the early eighties. Becoming Big Head Todd and The Monsters during 1986, that lane has twisted and turned just as much as Highway 66. Following a quiet D.I.Y. rise, the group shook the mainstream with 1993's now-classic platinum-certified Sister Sweetly. In it's wake, Robert Plant tapped the band to open his Fate of Nations Tour. Following Strategem [1994], they unveiled Beautiful World [1997] highlighted by a cover of "Boom Boom" [feat. John Lee Hooker]-which notably became the theme song for NCIS: New Orleans. They welcomed Jeremy to the fold in 2001. After penning "Blue Sky" at the urging of friends connected to NASA, they notably performed the song live from Mission Control as an interplanetary wakeup call for astronauts on the shuttle. Along the way, the guys joined B.B. King for a "Crossroads" session and toured with blues heroes a la Hubert Sumlin and David "Honeyboy" Edwards. They have headlined Red Rocks Amphitheatre a staggering 35 times. Recognizing "38 years of continuous musical service to fans," the Colorado Music Hall of Fame inducted the quartet as part of it's "Class of 2023." Now, they've crafted the perfect soundtrack to this journey in the form of their 12th full-length offering, Her Way Out.

Gothic in approach, but crushing guitar riffs galore, Tyr followed Black Sabbath's previous return to the spotlight by less than a year. Again leaning heavily on the darker side of life, or perhaps, death, Tyr is a set of tunes loosely based around the Norse tales of Odin and the gods of war. "Valhalla" is unlike anything the old Sabbath tried, yet still sounds familiar. "The Sabbath Stones" mix myth with metal in a crushing display of musical synthesis. With Tyr, Black Sabbath sound as serious as can be.

    Black Sabbath - Headless Cross (2024 Remaster) (1989) 44.1-24

    Time: 45:04

By the late '80s everyone had pretty much given up on Black Sabbath...and why not? After all, guitarist Tony Iommi was the only remaining original member, and the band had seen an outrageous number of musicians -- particularly lead singers -- crash through its battered ranks since Ozzy Osbourne's late-'70s sacking. So it was actually quite a shock to anyone still paying attention when no-name vocalist Tony Martin outperformed a string of higher-profile predecessors with his contributions to Sabbath's unexpected 1987 return to form, The Eternal Idol, then pulled off the even more remarkable feat of being invited back for a second go-round via 1989's equally satisfying Headless Cross. Arguably the finest Black Sabbath album sans Ozzy or Dio, Headless Cross also featured one of Black Sabbath's most formidable lineups ever: matching the two Tonys with veteran bassist Neil Murray (Whitesnake, Gary Moore, etc.) and experienced journeyman Cozy Powell (too many associations to list) -- one of the few drummers in possession of an instantly recognizable sound. It's Powell, in fact, who leads the Sabs back out to the battlefield when he detonates the reverie of atmospheric intro "The Gates of Hell" with his echoing, pounding war drums, but naturally everything on offer is ultimately bound to, and dependent upon, Iommi's almighty riffs -- from whence all rivers flow. This includes morbid monster-pieces such as "Kill in the Spirit World" and "Call of the Wild," which quake with simply massive power chords yet still manage to flow seamlessly into slightly more upbeat radio-friendly numbers like "Devil and Daughter" and "Black Moon." Likewise, whereas "When Death Calls" is surely one of Iommi's most spine-chilling compositions ever in terms of sheer malevolent force, the equally bewitching "Nightwing" flips the coin entirely with its delicate acoustic guitars and (dare it be said) highly romantic lyrics. In short, for those wise enough to appreciate Black Sabbath's discography beyond the Osbourne and Dio essentials, there can be no better place to start than Headless Cross or its worthy predecessor, The Eternal Idol.
