Trama:
Los Angeles. Martin Riggs è un poliziotto vedovo e reduce dal Vietnam, soprannominato "Arma letale" per il pericolo che rappresenta per sé stesso e per i colleghi che gli stanno vicino, poiché compie spesso gesti estremi al limite del suicidio. Per limitarlo, gli viene affiancato un esperto poliziotto, Roger Murtaugh, che a differenza di Riggs ha famiglia, è prossimo alla pensione e ci tiene ad evitare i guai. La non facile convivenza tra i due si cementa col tempo e con la assidua frequentazione anche al di fuori del lavoro.
Il caso principale di cui si occupano i due è la morte della figlia di un commilitone di Murtaugh, ritrovata esanime ai piedi di un grattacielo; questa vicenda verrà presto collegata al giro di droga importata da un boss e in cui lo stesso padre della ragazza è implicato. La vicenda si complica quando viene coinvolta anche la figlia di Roger, Rianne, che viene presa in ostaggio per ricattare quest'ultimo e non farlo intromettere negli sporchi traffici dei malavitosi. I due poliziotti però non si danno per vinti.
