Trama:
Storia d'amore piena di sfumature, il film è ambientato in un ideale mondo del futuro dove gli esseri umani sono stati geneticamente modificati e privati delle emozioni nel tentativo di proteggere la società dalla guerra e dall'instabilità motivata dai desideri e dalle passioni che hanno distrutto le generazioni precedenti. Ma il tentativo di sopprimere i sentimenti non va sempre a buon fine e in alcuni individui le emozioni riemergono. Il Collettivo definisce questa malattia la Switched-On Syndrom (Sindrome dell'accensione) o SOS. E quando una crisi sanitaria mette a rischio la sopravvivenza della società, tutti coloro che mostrano i sintomi della SOS sono sottoposti a pesanti trattamenti farmacologici o inviati al Den, un centro correzionale dal quale nessuno è mai tornato. Kristen Stewart e Nicholas Hoult sono Nia e Silas, gli sfortunati amanti del film che s'incontrano sul luogo di lavoro, la rivista scientifica, Atmos. Quando Silas comincia a mostrare i primi sintomi di SOS e sente un risveglio di emozioni, viene irresistibilmente attratto da Nia, che a sua volta tenta di nascondere la sua SOS. Ma più cercano di celare i loro sentimenti, maggiore diventa l'attrazione reciproca. Tuttavia, la felicità per la nuova e sconosciuta intimità, si accompagna alla paura di essere scoperti e mandati al Den. Con l'aiuto di un gruppo di sostegno formato da persone affette da SOS, Nia e Silas capiranno che la loro unica possibilità di salvezza è la fuga.
