Chakuro è un archivista quattordicenne che vive a bordo di un'immensa isola fluttuante, la Mud Whale, che solca il “mare” di dune. Nove abitanti su dieci dell’isola fluttuante sono dotati dell’abilità di utilizzare il "saimia", ciò rappresenta allo stesso tempo una benedizione e una maledizione, poiché seppur vero che il potere è utile, è anche vero che chi ne è portatore è destinato a morte precoce. Chakuro ed i suoi giovani amici non hanno mai avuto alcun contatto con persone estranee alla Mud Whale e passano il tempo a fantasticare sugli estranei, smaniosi di incontrarli; poiché durante la navigazione hanno incrociato varie isole, ma si sono rivelate tutte disabitate o abbandonate. Un giorno la loro isola ne incrocia una altrettanto grande, in questa occasione Chakura incontra una nuova ragazza, che cambierà il suo destino.
