Durante uno dei suoi spettacoli serali, l'attore comico Kumail (Nanjiani) nota nel pubblico la bella Emily Gardner (Zoe Kazan), e alla fine dello show le chiede di uscire. Tra i due nasce prima un'intesa e poi un'appassionata storia d'amore, destinata a incontrare i pregiudizi delle rispettive famiglie. Quella di Kumail è la tipica famiglia pakistano-musulmana legata alle tradizioni, compresa quella del matrimonio combinato. Mentre i genitori di Emily, Beth (Holly Hunter) e Terry (Ray Romano), sono una coppia di cinquantenni cinici e disillusi. Sarà la grave malattia che colpirà la ragazza a dare a Kumail il coraggio di ribellarsi alle rigide imposizioni familiari e provare a conquistare la fiducia della madre e il padre di Emily.
