Il detective John McClane viene incaricato di trovare un giovane pirata informatico, Matthew Farrell, ricercato dalla polizia che sta indagando sulla morte di alcuni hacker. Farrell, che senza rendersi conto delle conseguenze, ha collaborato al progetto che alcuni terroristi stanno per mettere in atto, scampa per merito di McClane ad un attentato. Nel frattempo un attacco informatico su vasta scala mette in stato di crisi l'intera nazione americana. Dopo aver salvato il giovane hacker, McClane lo porta dal capo dell'FBI di Washington, Bowman, che, dopo aver ascoltato da Farrell un'ipotesi su cosa potrebbe essere successo, lo affianca a McClane per cercare di mettere fine all'attacco. Farrell ha un'intuizione di come impedire i prossimi passi dei terroristi, e con l'aiuto di John riesce a ritardare le prime mosse. Lo spregevole Thomas Gabriel, ex collaboratore di Bowman e a capo dell'operazione di destabilizzazione nazionale, cerca di uccidere McClane, ma senza riuscire nel proprio intento. Per cercare di arginare la furia del poliziotto, Gabriel prende in ostaggio Lucy, la figlia di John. Durante la tradizionale festa di natale, un gruppo di terroristi prende in ostaggio i dipendenti di una multinazionale giapponese all'interno di un modernissimo grattcielo. John McClane parte per la Russia con l'obiettivo di tirar fuori di prigione il figlio Jack, che è stato arrestato con l'accusa di omicidio. Durante il suo soggiorno a Mosca, John scopre che dietro l'arresto del figlio si nasconde in realtà un piano criminale: il ragazzo è un agente della CIA, da tre anni sul suolo russo col compito di sventare un possibile attacco terroristico grazie all'aiuto di un ex trafficante di armi e uranio, convinto a collaborare con i servizi segreti degli USA. Purtroppo per i due, le autorità locali sono ben poco disponibili al dialogo. Padre e figlio non si parlano da tempo, ma nonostante gli iniziali dissapori, decidono di provare a sistemare le cose, per evitare che in Russia salga al potere un oligarca senza scrupoli e inviso alla diplomazia statunitense.
