Intanto Max, una prostituta di colore amica di Mike, viene invitata a casa da Eddie Dominguez l'autista della gang, che ha sottratto un pacchetto di droga: costei si presenta con l'amica Julie Mott, una fotografa. Fouchet, il capobanda, irrompe all'improvviso e uccide Eddie e Max; Julie scampa fortunosamente alla stessa sorte, e chiede la protezione di Mike, amico della defunta. Ma Mike é assente e Marcus si sostituisce a lui salvando la donna dai sicari, e la porta nella casa di Mike. Il capitano Howard ordina ai due di non rivelare l'inversione delle parti per non allarmare Julie, che decide di vendicare Max andando nel locale di Fouchet, dove si recano anche i due poliziotti che, dopo una sparatoria, riescono ad allontanarsi con Julie. Inseguiti dagli uomini di Fouchet, riescono a liberarsene solo facendo saltare i bidoni di etere, destinati alla raffinazione dell'eroina, di cui è carico il furgone utilizzato per la fuga. Frattanto lo scambio d'identità tra i due causa non pochi incidenti: Marcus crede che Mike lo tradisca con la moglie Theresa e va a casa sua dove litiga col socio, prima di accettare le sue scuse. Poi la moglie di Marcus, insospettita, va da Mike e fa una scenata al marito, supponendolo fedifrago, mentre Julie che si trova con loro ne approfitta per scappare ma viene rapita da Fouchet che ricatta la polizia per essere lasciato libero di andare via con la droga. Finalmente si scopre che Eddie ha subornato l'addetta all'archivio computerizzato della polizia che ha fornito i dati per il colpo. Costei rivela dove Fouchet nasconde la merce, e Mike e Marcus, non potendo ricorrere a rinforzi perchè destituiti, affrontano in un acceso scontro l'intera banda: Julie riesce a scampare, tutto il magazzino va a fuoco e dopo un inseguimento drammatico Fouchet viene ucciso.
