Backed by a handpicked group of musicians, dubbed the BFGs (perhaps a nod to Gibbons' initials, rather than a Roald Dahl reference), the album takes on an Afro-Cuban flavour that will probably come as something of a surprise to some of Gibbons' fans and followers. It shouldn't, though, as Latin rhythms are something deeply rooted in the guitarist's life. Tito Puente, a friend of Billy's bandleader dad, taught him some of the essential conga, bongo, maracas, and timbales rhythms way back in his childhood. As he put it himself, signposting the album's clear debt to Latin rhythms, 'banging away on 'em came back like riding on a lost bicycle'.
