    Descrizione Combat Mission Cold War è ambientato negli anni cruciali di un conflitto che ha attanagliato il mondo per 45 anni. Tra il 1979-1982, sia le forze armate della NATO che quelle sovietiche del Patto di Varsavia hanno iniziato il passaggio dalla guerra industrializzata dell'inizio del XX secolo al moderno campo di battaglia digitale di oggi. Combat Mission Cold War simula diversi scenari di conflitto "what if" tra le forze statunitensi e sovietiche incentrate sullo strategico Fulda Gap e dintorni nella Germania occidentale. Il gioco simula anche i primi giorni del National Training Center (NTC) degli Stati Uniti quando le forze statunitensi iniziarono a trasformarsi rapidamente dalla dottrina dell'era del Vietnam e verso i concetti rivoluzionari di AirLand Battle che avrebbero definito la guerra nell'era moderna. Combat Mission Cold War è pensato per essere una sandbox per la sperimentazione, ad esempio come si svolgerebbe una situazione se equipaggiati con M-60A3 o M1 nel 1982 affrontando T-80? La campagna NTC ti mette al comando di una squadra della compagnia dell'esercito americano mentre inizia la sua rotazione e il processo simulando il fuoco contro la prima formazione in stile sovietico nel mondo, l'NTC OPFOR (Opposing Force). - La campagna della Germania Ovest degli Stati Uniti. Ambientato nel corridoio strategico meridionale di Fulda tra Fulda e Hanau, la campagna degli Stati Uniti si svolge su mappe storicamente accurate mentre il giocatore prende il comando del 2° Bn TF del 28° Reg. di fanteria in una corsa per fermare il colosso sovietico. In linea con il tema sandbox di Combat Mission Cold War, ci sono due versioni della campagna degli Stati Uniti, 1982 e 1979, per consentire ai giocatori di vedere e confrontare le differenze di equipaggiamento tra i due periodi. - La campagna sovietica. Ambientata a nord e ad est di Fulda, la campagna sovietica segue il "Ride of the 120th Motor Rifle Regt" nelle prime 48 ore di una fittizia "what if" invasione della Germania occidentale. I giocatori combatteranno su campi di battaglia storici "che non sono mai esistiti", come Eiterfield e Alsfeld come parte della prima ondata di truppe sovietiche che corrono verso i loro obiettivi divisionali.
