The first incarnation of Jade Warrior featured Tony Duhig (guitars) and Jon Field (flutes, percussion), both of whom had been in the Psychedelic group July, and Glyn Havard (bass, vocals). Signing to the legendary Vertigo label, the band recorded their self-titled debut album in March 1971. A remarkable work, 'Jade Warrior' would be the template upon which the band would build their unique sound - venturing stylistically between ethnic music, melodic, gentle ethereal and ambient sounds and heavier guitar driven rock. By the time of the recording of this, their third album, in 1972, the band had expanded to a quartet with drummer Allan Price adding a new character to the band's sound. In recent years their music has featured in the popular TV shows such as Stranger Things and video games including Grand Theft Auto. The last few months have seen Tangerine Dream, in their Berlin studio space, working on new material - the EP "Probe 6-8", their follow-up release to 2017's critically acclaimed "Quantum Gate" album. Classic studio productions and late-night real-time compositions became the blueprint for slowly evolving ambient structures. The band's sequencer-drived sound in the tradition of the early '70s work was combined with lush 1980s crystalline bliss. Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yamane and Paul Frick composed and produced with full access to Edgar Froese's Cubase arrangements and Otari Tape Archive with recordings from 1977-2013. For the first time in decades, Tangerine Dream's tracks cannot exactly be re-created for a live performance. An EP, which was not meant to be performed live, as a direct response to the many cancelled shows of the last months. The result feels like a logical progression from 2019's Giants of All Sizes, an album that was at odds with the prevailing, Spotify-friendly currents; one that asked listeners to approach it as a single suite of songs. A sense of space permeates throughout here, the band's long-established love of prog evident in the gently meandering, loose-limbed arrangements, recalling at times a more earthbound Laughing Stock-era Talk Talk. With the exception of impassioned closer What Am I Without You, there is nothing on Flying Dream 1 that leaps out at the listener; instead these songs represent subtle gradations of softly articulated warmth and empathy. After the Eclipse, with its gorgeous-sounding invitation to "come out into the sun", is lifted by Sarah Field's clarinet flourishes; Is It a Bird is a masterclass in minimalist restraint. There are two paths to making a Christmas record: cover the classics or write your own tunes. Given that Christmas music is built on impossibly catchy one-hit wonders, and the list of successful songwriters includes such talents as Irving Berlin ("White Christmas"), Leroy Anderson ("Sleigh Ride") and Johnny Marks ("Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer"), the bar is high if you're banging out originals. On the other hand, presenting your version of the classics is equally daunting considering that you're following heavyweights like Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Elvis Presley. Norah Jones decided to split the risk by molding classics into her style while also writing half an album of new Christmas originals. Twenty years past her early but still resonant hits like "Don't Know Why," and "Turn Me On" (both from blockbuster debut Come Away with Me) Jones makes her mark on the genre with the five tunes she penned, sometimes in collaboration with album producer Leon Michels. The single, a Jones original called "Christmas Calling (Jolly Jones)," is an enjoyably melodic holiday number. Her gospel-inflected "You're Not Alone" unfurls like a classic '60s country tune with an assembly of overdubs providing angelic vocals on the choruses and a pedal steel guitar ringing in the background. Pedal steel returns on "Winter Wonderland" where a synth sounds like timbales. The champ among the classics attempted, however, is "Christmas Don't Be Late" which gets a wonderfully slow, torchy arrangement. Memorable details include the oozy horns of Raymond Mason, Dave Guy and Leon Michels, the snare drum reverb, and Jones-singing her own harmonies-leaning into the "hula hoop" line. Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time Is Here," famous from the Peanuts cartoon, is a natural fit for Jones' piano-and-voice prowess. Berlin's "White Christmas'' gets a straight mid tempo cocktail jazz reading with Jones keeping up a brisk pace. On the other hand, the Elvis chestnut, "Blue Christmas'' gets an ultra-slow reading with Jones on piano and vocals, letting her impeccably tight vibrato stretch over this holiday lament. The other favorite that Jones makes her own is "Run Rudolph Run," best known as Chuck Berry's Christmas hit, which here benefits from a deep rhumba beat and reverb on her doubled vocals.
