McClane, intenzionato a parlare con il figlio a qualunque costo, si mette alla guida e riesce a mettere temporaneamente fuori gioco gli inseguitori. Padre e figlio si ritrovano così insieme dopo tanto tempo, ma Jack non nasconde il proprio disappunto. A quanto pare il mandante del tentato rapimento è Cagharin, ex trafficante d'armi e collega di Komarov. A causa del pentimento di quest'ultimo, Cagharin è costretto a dargli la caccia, per paura che possa diffondere informazioni compromettenti sul suo conto che ostacolino la sua candidatura al Dipartimento della difesa russo. Nel frattempo Jack e il padre riescono a trovare un riparo apparentemente sicuro. Nonostante gli iniziali dissapori, John invita il figlio ferito a non mollare, anche se il piano per ottenere le informazioni da Komarov è saltato. Ripartono insieme alla volta di Chernobyl, dove si trova una cassetta di sicurezza contenente dei file su Cagharin, dove però troveranno dei criminali ad attenderli... Simon chiede che McClane si attenga alle sue istruzioni e avverte che la mancata esecuzione provocherà altre esplosioni e morti innocenti. Come prima richiesta, lo squilibrato vuole che il poliziotto giri in mutande per le strade di Harlem con un vistoso cartello a sandwich con una scritta offensiva per le persone di colore. Poco prima di essere linciato da un gruppo di ragazzi afroamericani, John è tratto in salvo da Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson), un onesto negoziante del quartiere. Simon non gradisce l'interferenza di Zeus e l’obbliga a partecipare al folle gioco al fianco di McClane. Ordina quindi ai due di arrivare al telefono di una fermata della metro, pena l’esplosione di una bomba posizionata in un vagone. Intanto i federali scoprono che Simon non è altri che il fratello maggiore del cattivissimo Hans Gruber, che John fece precipitare dal Nakatomi Palace sette anni prima. È chiaro che lo squilibrato voglia vendicarsi personalmente e per farlo è disposto a mettere a ferro e a fuoco tutta New York. Dopo che Simon comunica che è stata piazzata un'altra bomba in una scuola, McClane capisce che dietro il desiderio di vendetta del pazzo si cela un progetto più grande... Lo scopo in apparenza è quello di costringere le autorità a liberare alcuni detenuti. In verità l'obiettivo di Gruber è quello di penetrare nel caveau dell'edificio e rubare titoli di stato dal valore di milioni di dollari. I terroristi tengono tutti in ostaggio, ad eccezione di McClane, che riesce a rifugiarsi nei piani del palazzo non ancora ultimati. L'uomo cerca disperatamente di avvisare la polizia, attirando l’attenzione del sergente Al Powell, che è riuscito a contattare attraverso una radiotrasmittente. McClane si trova da solo ad affrontare alcuni terroristi, ma in questo modo svela la sua presenza a Gruber. Circondato il grattacielo dalla polizia, giunge anche L'FBI che assume il comando dell'intera operazione. Nonostante l’intervento di quest’ultima, che riporta gravi perdite in un primo intervento con un mezzo corazzato, McClane rimane l’unico a poter affrontare la minaccia in maniera efficace ed è forse l’unica speranza per tutti gli ostaggi, compresa la moglie Holly.
