L'idea di formare una band nasce da Dre che propone a Eazy-E di finanziare un'etichetta discografica, la Ruthless Records, per proporre brani di denuncia che parlino di violenza, crimine e abusi che la polizia infligge ad altri afroamericani come loro tutti i giorni. Il progetto ha subito un grande successo e, con l'aggiunta di DJ Yella (Neil Brown Jr) e MC Ren (Aldis Hodge), nasce il gruppo degli NWA (Niggaz Wit Attitudes). Così arriva anche il primo contratto e la registrazione dell'album Straight Outta Compton, dopo il quale non tardano ad arrivare gli attacchi delle forze armate, che spingono Ice Cube a scrivere la canzone Fuck tha Police. Ben presto il gruppo musicale sarà soprannominato dai media “gangsta rap”, per i suoi contenuti e il suo linguaggio violento.
