A major highlight is the new mix by Terry Date, the legendary producer who was behind the console for the band's previous four landmark albums: Cowboys from Hell (1990), Vulgar Display of Power (1992),Far Beyond Driven (1994) and The Great Southern Trendkill (1996). The group's fifth album to feature the classic lineup - brothers "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and Vinnie Paul on guitar and drums, vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown - was less turbulent than its predecessor, 1996's The Great Southern Trendkill. (Anselmo, struggling with substance abuse issues, chose to record his vocal tracks separately once the band had laid down their tracks.) But Abbott later compared the sessions to "pulling teeth.[Anselmo] didn't like any of the material, and it was always just like this head-butting contest." Nonetheless, critics enjoyed another round of Pantera's signature groove metal, and Reinventing The Steel matched Trendkill's Billboard chart peak of No. 4 (although it was only certified gold by the RIAA compared to the platinum discs their last four releases earned). "Where The Great Southern Trendkill experimented with slower, moodier pieces, Reinventing the Steel finds Pantera sticking to the pulverizing basics of their sound, with the first down-tempo, nondistorted guitar part appearing on the next-to-last track, "It Makes Them Disappear," and vanishing about 15 seconds into the song. In the tradition of the group's best albums, Reinventing the Steel is a nonstop assault on the senses, offering no respite from the intensity until the album has stopped playing. Yet somehow, it comes off as a cut below their best albums; perhaps it's that the band's sound lacks the sense of freshness that sparked Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, and Far Beyond Driven, or perhaps it's simply good in a very predictable way (contrary to its title). Yet even if Pantera is firmly entrenched in a signature sound, it's a distinctive, highly effective signature sound that most of the band's fans don't want to hear changed; plus, Dimebag Darrell is still one of the most inventive guitar players in heavy metal. The bottom line is that the way you feel about Reinventing the Steel will likely depend on whether you object to more of the same; if not, then the lean focus of its attack -- the most concise, actually, since Vulgar Display -- will make it more than worthwhile." Emerging from the eerie trip-hop and bleak grunge of the critically acclaimed, multi-platinum Garbage, the quartet expanded their vision, going into overdrive with a futuristic sound that blended their inspirations both classic (the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and the Pretenders) and contemporary (Björk, Portishead, and the Prodigy). While Garbage retained the sleaze and effortless cool of their debut -- hinted on early tracks "As Heaven Is Wide" and "A Stroke of Luck" -- they infused Version 2.0 with deeper electronic layering, improved hooks, and an intimate lyrical focus courtesy of iconic vocalist Shirley Manson, who seized her place as the face and voice of the band with authority and confidence. On the propulsive "When I Grow Up" and the bittersweet "Special," Garbage took cues from '60s girl groups with "sha-la-la"s and stacked vocal harmonies, grounding them with a delivery inspired by Chrissie Hynde. Elsewhere, the hard techno edges of Curve and Björk cut through the frustrated "Dumb" and the lusty "Sleep Together," while Depeche Mode's Wild West years received tribute on the stomping "Wicked Ways." Beyond the blistering hit singles "I Think I'm Paranoid" and "Push It," Version 2.0 is also home to Garbage's most tender and heartbreaking moments, from the pensive "Medication" to the trip-hop-indebted "The Trick Is to Keep Breathing" and "You Look So Fine." None of them got higher than number 20 in the UK singles chart (Version 2.0 had delivered three top ten hits in Britain). The three-CD edition of Beautiful Garbage offers 35 bonus tracks The good news is that the band are reissuing the album as a three-CD deluxe edition (in a clamshell box) with a much more satisfying collection of bonus material when compared to the last two anniversary editions. The album itself is remastered and CD 2 offers B-sides and alternate versions with six previously unreleased selections.
