Following the success of the recent string of albums, from Albion to Illuminati, Hughes was joined once again by guitarists Dann Rosingana and Steve Grocott along with bass player Steve McKenna, keyboard maestro Darrel Treece-Birch and guest drummer Markus Kullman (Sinner, Glenn Hughes, Voodoo Circle) for the recording of Something Wicked This Way Comes. Ten continue to raise the musical bar higher for themselves, a goal they push on every release. Stunning guitar work, rich keyboards, excellent bass and drum interplay along with Hughes' rich vocals are the order of the day here, as they were on this album's immediate predecessor, Here Be Monsters. Something Wicked This Way Comes was produced by Gary Hughes and mixed and mastered by Dennis Ward. Ten's longstanding professional association with Dennis has been ongoing since he mixed their 2011 album, Stormwarning and has always guaranteed albums with stunning sound and production. Fans should note that there are no ties between Something Wicked This Way Comes and Here Be Monsters or anything of this nature. Todd Kerns is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer. He is most noted for being the bass player and back-up singer in Slash, featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators and for being the frontman of gold record selling Canadian band The Age Of Electric. In recent years he has been making his mark as a singer-songwriter with sold-out solo performances as well as fronting former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick's band as well as his own Canadian supergroup, Toque. Guitarist Stef Burns has a fantastic and varied history in rock music. He has spent time playing with pop acts like Sheila E, Berlin and Huey Lewis & The News as well as rock acts like Y&T, with whom he recorded four albums, and Alice Cooper, playing on the albums "Hey Stoopid" and "The Last Temptation". Stef currently plays with Italian rock superstar Vasco Rossi and also has his own band, The Stef Burns League. Drummer Will Hunt currently resides in the drum throne for Evanescence, with whom he started playing in 2007, and has performed and written on their last three studio albums, including their most recent release, "The Bitter Truth", which debuted at #1 on 27 different countries' album charts. It's often a challenge to take influences from the past to remain relevant in an ever-evolving music market - these gentlemen sprinkle in guitar-driven material with the right soulful, passionate vocal melodies/harmonies that keep people moving along, taking the energy of the 80's/early 90's into the current century. The electricity pulsating from the main chord progressions and complementary clean/aggressive transitions of Jaakko Leaflet and Antti Kallio sends immediate earworms to the brain on first exposure for "Earth" or the heads down, dirty rocker "Shades of Black". The steady rhythm section duties of bassist Fabian Korsström and drummer Pekka Jokela fill the foundation as steady as necessary - throwing down little fills or additional hooks to make "Gonna Do It" and the Alter Bridge-like "Someone Somewhere" intoxicating toe-tappers. Stronger background vocal support from the band allows for deeper chorus affiliations - traversing the sleaze/modern hard rock angles on the commercial-oriented "Resonate" while possessing a bit of that Scandinavian touch on the thoughtful, bouncy "Johnny Two-Face". The versatility of tracks is an ideal selling point, brought home by the magnetic voice of Jaakko as the main vocalist - he can be smooth or restrained as in the opening verse for "Alone-Alive" while executing a primal, psychedelic-driven aura on the already talked about "Shades of Black". Closer "Something Beyond" could be a difference maker - the cultural, Celtic-oriented harmonies plus acoustic to electric riffs possess a bit of that Finnish melancholy like latter period Sentenced, Jaakko giving his all in engaging melodies while the lead breaks set ears to stun mode. Together at this point for a decade, Leaflet may seem on the surface to be a very basic heavy/hard rock-oriented band - yet Something Beyond has that extra depth of multi-generational appeal through dynamic compositions, solid focus, and that alluring vocal harmony component. For "Lights Of Japan", Issa worked with producer Michele Guaitoli, who has produced albums by Visions Of Atlantis, Kalidia, SheWolf, and many more, and is also the vocalist for Visions Of Atlantis, Temperance, and ERA. Guaitoli also played guitars and bass on the album as well as contributing to the songwriting on two tracks. For the bulk of the album's songwriting, Issa's husband James Martin and his brother Tom, both former members of UK melodic rockers VEGA, contributed their immense talents.
