Trama Giugno 1942. A pochi mesi dal raid su Pearl Harbor si consuma nel mezzo dell’Oceano Pacifico la prima disfatta giapponese della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Grazie all’intervento degli ammiragli Nimitz, Fletcher e Spruance la flotta marittima di Yamamoto viene sconfitta nell’atollo delle isole Midway. L’evento, vero e proprio giro di boa del conflitto, segna anche uno storico fallimento per la marina militare del Sol Levante la cui ultima débâcle risaliva addirittura al 1863. Per raccontare questo capitolo decisivo del XX secolo, Hollywood confeziona uno degli ultimi kolossal bellici della sua produzione, applicando la concezione all-star del catastrofico anni Settanta a una drammaturgia da cinema di papà. Ne scaturisce un grande esempio conclusivo del genere epico-eroico, fondato su convenzioni narrative estremamente polarizzate e perciò destinate a crollare sotto il peso di nuove e più complesse dinamiche geopolitiche a venire. Nel cast, dominato da Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda e James Coburn, sono presenti molte altre stelle hollywoodiane quali Glenn Ford, Robert Mitchum, Cliff Robertson, Robert Wagner e Toshirô Mifune. Da segnalare il commento musicale di John Williams e la fotografia in Panavision di Harry Stradling, Jr. Il film fu presentato nelle sale corredato dal sistema sonoro denominato “Sensurround”, inventato nel 1974 per il “disaster movie” Terremoto.
