Formed in 2004 by keyboard player Jem Godfrey, the band have so far released 3 studio albums, and most recently the career-spanning '13 Winters' collection. Now the band have returned as the 3-piece of Godfrey alongside longtime collaborators John Mitchell & Nathan King. "We were quite energised by the change to be honest", says Godfrey, "it gave us a much broader palette of options in compositional terms, we would write a song and say, "Let's imagine drummer x has joined the band, what would he do here? It led us off in some interesting new directions". In the end, three drummers became part of the recording project : Kaz Rodriguez (Chaka Khan, Josh Groban), Darby Todd (The Darkness, Martin Barre) and Pat Mastelotto (Mister Mister, King Crimson). "Each musician brought a very different style of playing to the music," says John Mitchell, "and we tailored the songs to suit them." In January 2020, the band setup a new temporary studio for a week in a converted coastguard tower at Dungeness in East Sussex, UK. "We were 30 feet by the sea, next to a nuclear power station and a lighthouse, in midwinter! So there was hardly any daylight and the weather was dreadful", laughs bassist Nathan King, "We wrote "Terrestrial" and "Repeat To Fade" there and in my head you can absolutely hear the bleak isolated oppression having an effect on us. The songs we wrote were far darker - the wind howling round the building at night, the power station generating crackles on the audio, a huge lighthouse next door sweeping a vast light into the fog every 30 seconds and John screaming "ENJOY YOURSELVES YOU SCUM" into a microphone. Once again, vocalist Hannah Reid takes center stage with her powerful, angelic instrument, which can stir the soul at the smokiest depths before jolting everything to the heavens in a fashion much like Florence Welch or Annie Lennox. Dan Rothman and Dominic Major provide lush accompaniment to Reid's voice, creating a gorgeous cinematic landscape that ranges from dreamlike wisps to fully enveloping grandeur. The first half of the album takes time to pick up, as Reid slowly eases listeners into "Wild Eyed," an expansive moment that recalls 2013's "Hey Now." The thumping heartbeat of "Oh Woman, Oh Man" gives the band equal time to shine. Other highlights include the throbbing "Non Believer," the uplifting Florence-esque "Bones of Ribbon," and the sweeping "Leave the War with Me." These tracks provide a much-needed jolt of energy to balance the album's other quieter moments, which tend to lull the listener into a dreamlike haze. While it's an overall relaxing experience, Truth Is a Beautiful Thing is never boring; it's a comforting and often heartbreaking listen that really gets under the skin, especially with Reid's emotive delivery. © Neil Z. But long before this was the norm, and before musicians were routinely involved in more than one band, there was Liquid Tension Experiment. Back in 1997, Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic, Sons of Apollo), John Petrucci (Dream Theater), Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), and Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel), joined forces to create Liquid Tension Experiment. The foursome would release their iconic, self-titled debut album in 1998 and the dazzling follow-up, LTE2 in 1999, creating a dynamic, frantic, and inventive sound all their own. The incredible creativity between the collective would prompt Petrucci and Portnoy to invite Rudess to join Dream Theater, effectively marking the end of this side project. However, since that time, there have been few reunions more in demand. Now, with the world in lockdown and calendars unexpectedly aligned, the inconceivable has finally happened.Liquid Tension Experiment 3. The 8 songs on the new LTE3 are a mix of 4 fully composed tracks, 2 duets, 1 on-the-fly jam and 1 meticulously arranged cover. "We composed four songs. We realized that that was the same with the first 2 albums. So, this time around we did the same," Portnoy explains. Jordan Rudess agrees, "It felt like a continuation, like we stopped recording LTE2 and walked in a week later we're doing LTE3. I know it's amazing to say, but time has passed in a moment, the blink of an eye, the chemistry is the chemistry, and it didn't change. It was great back then and it still is." Petrucci comments: "Who would think that a bunch of guys our age would be playing like that? It's relentless. It's definitely like a statement, you know we're back. Recorded mostly during the world tour for TUSK, FLEETWOOD MAC LIVE delivered a double-album's worth of exhilarating performances that included massive hits like "Dreams" and "Go Your Own Way," "Rhiannon," and "Don't Stop." The original album, produced by the band with Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut, was culled primarily from the 1979-1980 Tusk tour but with a few additions from the 1977 tour supporting Rumours. It was a truly international affair, with songs recorded in cities including Tokyo, Paris, London, Nashville, Kansas City, Tucson, Cleveland, Santa Monica, St. Louis, and Oklahoma City. The band dug back to the Peter Green days for "Oh Well" but mostly celebrated their recent triumphs such as "Say You Love Me," "Dreams," "Monday Morning," "Sara," "Landslide," "Over My Head," "Rhiannon," and "Don't Stop." One rarity was "Don't Let Me Down Again" from Buckingham Nicks, as captured in Passaic, New Jersey in 1975. Three new songs premiered on Live, too: Christine McVie's "One More Night," Stevie Nicks' "Fireflies," and a "backstage" rendition of Brian Wilson and Mike Love's Beach Boys oldie "Farmer's Daughter" with rich Mac harmonies. Both "Fireflies" and "Farmer's Daughter" were issued as singles, with the former peaking at No. 60 on the Hot 100. Such is the case with American band The National who have been together for 20 years. Here, their singer, Matt Berninger, has undergone his first project outside the band, but he is not alone. Tens of musicians have participated in Serpentine Prison including Gail Ann Dorsey (Bowie's loyal former bassist among others), Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson's lucky harmonicist), Andrew Bird, as well as even three members of The National. The album is produced by the legendary Booker T. Jones, who also contributes on the keys. This star-studded line-up have created a modest work in contrast to the blockbuster album you might expect. Less rock-oriented than with The National, Berninger toes the line between acoustic and the genre the Americans and Brits would refer to as "singer-songwriter", a strain of folk and country where the lyrics are as important as the music itself. With its American style, the album sounds like the soundtrack to a night-time road trip with moments of ecstasy, reverie and even weariness. With his deep vocals and elegantly minimalistic accompaniments (piano, guitars, light brass sections), Matt Berninger confidently blends traces of crooners like Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. Pleasantly produced, Serpentine Prison plunges the listener into the delights of a dreamy autumn scene.
