Il ragionier Giorgio Allegri, bancario milanese, è innamorato della dolce e bella fidanzata Candida. Dopo essersi trasferito a Roma per lavoro, Giorgio comincia la difficile ricerca di un appartamento in grado di ospitare lui, la fidanzata, la suocera Anastasia ed il suo alano Gaetano. La ricerca di Giorgio si conclude quando per caso un misterioso individuo, Omar detto il Saraceno, gli offre la possibilità di abitare una bellissima villa sulla via Appia a un canone particolarmente basso. La villa trovata da Giorgio è però "stregata": mille anni prima due innamorati, sorpresi dalla madre di lei, furono trasformati in statue di sale. Per rompere l'incantesimo Candida dovrà restare illibata fino alla prima notte di luna piena, momento dal quale inizierà il millesimo anno dall'incantesimo. Omar, in realtà, è lo spirito di un guerriero arabo servitore dei due innamorati che, tra gli improperi e le resistenze di Giorgio e la perplessità di Candida, cercherà di fare in modo che i due innamorati non abbiano rapporti antecedenti la prima notte di luna piena, giunta la quale i due ragazzi ormai sposati potranno finalmente sciogliere l'incantesimo e verranno ricompensati da una pioggia di monete d'oro ed essere ricchi e felici.
